Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Chris Lanard. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Chris, appreciate you joining us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
I do wish that I started my music career a lot earlier. I started at the age of 21 I was working a direct care job just trying to make ends meet. I just so happened to get a new job and had two coworkers who made their own beats. Recorded their own songs and wrote their own lyrics they taught me everything I know today shout out to my guys “RicoTheVillain” and “Brazo”. starting earlier would have given me a leg up I would’ve probably became more polished around that age that I actually started and I would’ve learned the game a lot earlier, especially the business side I was screwed out of a situation a really big one I was writing for an artist who eventually signed to Roc Nation and the record she put out before she got a deal. I never got credit or any money for but I wouldn’t have changed the way that I did anything creatively all my peers told me I took very quick leaps and bounds because my work ethic was very crazy but I definitely wish I would’ve started sooner. I probably would have had a record deal or had a big enough fan base to make this a full-time thing.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Well, my name is Chris Lanard And I’m a rapper, singer, songwriter producer from Detroit, Michigan I got in this game honestly just wanting to be a writer and a producer, but that quickly changed once I heard myself on a track for the first time and everyone that heard that first record seemed to feel like I had a great voice and my voice was meant for it so I wanted to actually be good at doing this and I was inspired by quite a few artists Ludacris Outkast, Busta Rhymes, JAY-Z Etcetera but what sets me apart from others is the fact that I’m 6’7 I used to have a basketball build but now I’m more of a football build now that I’m a father and a couch potato so I commanded attention when I first walk into a room, but what also sets me a part is the distinctiveness in my voice, and my ability to wordplay. People are always shocked at the level of skill when it comes to rap just because the first thing they think when they see me is, he’s an athlete which I am a former athlete I played semi pro and in pro in a league in Canada for a brief stint but what I am most proud of when it comes to my music career the fact that I’ve been able to make it to Big platforms and networks such as BET Netflix sway in the morning and I’ve written for a few major artists and a few former major artists as well as having Records with over 1 million streams I want people to know that when they hear my music that it’ll be a breath of fresh air for them. I want my music to do for people what it did for me which was keep me alive.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is making people happy helping them catch a vibe enjoy a moment or moments or capture some parts of their life that they can relate to within my music and also knowing that I actually have fans out there who look forward to hearing the records I put out it’s exciting

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think society should be more open to giving creatives a chance who aren’t on the biggest of platforms and be open to doing their homework to become an actual fan, we familiarize ourselves with the faces we see and hear so much from the radio TV and Internet. It’s so many creatives out there people tend to overlook them when they aren’t the popular choice or the familiar face. I do Uber full-time and when people get in my car, I’m already playing my music and most of them ask before they get out who is it and where can they find it Which I love because they can’t give me a bias evaluation lol but I have also had passengers who asked me to turn on music that they are familiar with without giving it a real chance Drake, J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Will Smith, Denzel, Washington, Jamie Foxx Kevin Hart, Dave Chappelle etc weren’t always full-time creatives, everybody starts from the bottom but most importantly none of us can get there without support
