We were lucky to catch up with Chris & Kelly Travelers Moon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Chris & Kelly thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
As “ghost hunters”, it seems we get looked at with a raised eyebrow somewhat frequently. People either think we’re these bizarre occultists doing odd things in abandoned buildings late at night, or….we’re just crazy.
The truth is (at least for us), is that what we do doesn’t come from this macabre fascination with death, but rather this idea that there’s something more to life that we don’t quite understand yet. It’s the idea that our soul’s experience doesn’t end when we die, and we like to think that comes from a place of hope.
As for the crazy part, we don’t THINK we’re crazy…but in all fairness, a crazy person doesn’t think they’re crazy…do they?
Chris & Kelly , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
We’re Chris Nielson and Kelly McCarville (soon to be Nielson as well)!
We are paranormal investigators based out of Cedar Rapids, Iowa with somewhere around 40 years experience between the two of us.
Kelly is a gifted psychic medium who has been a “life long paranormal investigator” having grown up in a haunted home and interacting with spirits from a very young age.
Chris is an author, psychic, and shamanic practitioner who has spent years traveling and studying both the “scientific” and the spiritual aspects of paranormal phenomena.
What we do is pretty multifaceted and has us on the road 35+ weekends a year traveling the country.
We go to allegedly haunted locations for film projects that we either livestream or publish later. Our hopes are to either prove or disprove paranormal claims, have our own experiences, share history and ideas, and to make all that as entertaining as possible.
We’re also event hosts! Several times a year we host events where we invite people into these locations to investigate with us. Kelly also hosts 5 successful paranormal & psychic expos across Iowa.
With this much experience under our belts, we also find ourselves doing public speaking events quite frequently wether that be at paranormal conventions, schools, or libraries. Our presentations vary from educational to just sharing some good old fashioned (true) ghost stories.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
We’re not sure we’ll ever truly understand the paranormal, or it would stop being “PARAnormal” pretty quick. So there’s not really an end game there.
Instead, we’re just loving the process. We love the people we get to meet and interact with (both corporeal and otherwise), the beautiful and unique locations we get to visit, and the travel that goes along with all of it. We also love that we get to have all these adventures together.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
This lifestyle definitely isn’t for everyone. We both still hold down regular 9-5 jobs (a cost analyst and a brewer) on top of our otherwise crazy schedule. The constant grind requires just as much, if not more, resilience than when the universe decides to throw us the big curveballs (like 13 hour flight delays).
We’ll leave work on a Friday to get to the town of the location we’ll be filming at that’s 7 hours away. Sleep a couple hours. Be on site all day setting up cameras and other equipment. Conduct our investigations until 4am or so. Tear it all down. Back to the hotel for a couple hours of sleep. Drive the 7 hours home. Back to work on Monday. During the week after work there’s footage review, product making, social media content, and plotting our next adventure.
It can be exhausting at times, but we love (almost) every moment of it!
