Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Chris Kelly. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Chris, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
The idea for The Cooking Leprechaun came from when I was attending culinary school at Escoffier School of Culinary Arts. I developed a YouTube page called the Cooking Leprechaun to show people what I was doing on a week to week basis for my cooking assignments. I had a small following and doing videos, editing and doing my assignments, plus doing a full time job got too intense. After graduating with my culinary diploma my family and I opened up an in-home bakery. It was catching on, we weren’t overwhelmed but it kept us busy. Then I decided to go back to school to complete my associates in culinary, then immediately did the associates in baking and pastry. Once I graduated my son asked me to get a food truck so that he could get out of factory work. My wife and I took the leap of faith to get the food truck and we named it a few different names. The first one was The Cooking Leprechaun Bakery which lasted only for a little time because we were doing entrees and baked goods, so then we changed the name to The Cooking Leprechaun Bakery and More, but people still thought that we only had bakery items, so we dropped bakery and more and The Cooking Leprechaun was formed.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I believe what helped build our reputation is our church. They reached out for us to do an event and have been there with us from day one. God and our church community is what has helped build our reputation
. Things that we have done to help further that reputation is providing friendly service, delivering on time and listening to the customer on their needs.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Our kickoff event that we attended was in Hardinsburg, KY, The Outdoor Expo. Our idea was to use wild game on our menu, so that is what we did. We had a barbecue truck next to us that had lines all day long and we had very few customers the entire day. One of our customers was the barbecue truck owner he tried one of our candies and came back and purchased 6 more boxes then explained what we needed to do to get customers. He explained from the packaging, presentation and even what people want, Loaded Anything! He told us that no matter what we were serving have something that is “Loaded”. We took his advice, revamped our menu and now we have a great menu that has brought us customers and now we too get those all day lines.
