We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chris Hiltz a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Chris, appreciate you joining us today. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
Being a business owner brings me immense joy, but it’s undeniably challenging. There are moments when I question if it would be easier to return to a regular job or work for someone else. These “dark nights of the soul” are tough, but they often lead to the most significant breakthroughs for both me personally and the business.
Let me take you back to a recent time when I had this thought. It was late at night, and I was sitting in my home office, surrounded by stacks of paperwork and my laptop glowing dimly. The weight of upcoming deadlines, financial pressures, and managing my team felt overwhelming. I had been working tirelessly for weeks, and exhaustion was catching up with me. I remember staring out the window, seeing the lights of other homes where people were likely unwinding after a day’s work, and I wondered if I was doing it all wrong.
I thought about how, if I had worked for someone else before starting my business, I might have avoided some of these mistakes. Perhaps I could have learned the ropes under the guidance of a seasoned mentor and been further along in my journey. The security of a steady paycheck and clear-cut responsibilities seemed appealing at that moment.
But then, I reminded myself of why I chose this path. The challenges I face as a business owner push me to grow in ways I never imagined. They force me to build deeper resilience, tenacity, and the drive to achieve what sometimes feels impossible. Working for someone else might have been easier, but it wouldn’t have given me the same sense of fulfillment and purpose.
Ultimately, these moments of doubt make me a stronger leader and a better person. They teach me that while the journey is tough, the rewards are immeasurable. So yes, there are times when I think about what it would be like to have a regular job, but those thoughts always lead me back to the realization that being a business owner, with all its ups and downs, is where I truly thrive.

My name is Chris, and I’m the proud owner and visionary behind TLIC, a wedding photo, video, and planning company. Since 2018, we’ve been on a mission to transform the wedding industry with our heartfelt dedication, innovative solutions, and an unwavering commitment to making every couple’s journey to “I do” as joyful and memorable as the big day itself.
For those who may not have read about me before, let me share a bit about my journey and the story of TLIC. I’m Chris, often referred to as the “Oz behind the curtain” at TLIC Media. In the least boastful way possible, my life is amazing. I have a fantastic wife, Lexy, and two beautiful and healthy children, Hudson and Rylan. I’m fortunate to lead a talented, passionate, and fun-to-be-around team, and I have the most amazing clients anyone could ask for.
My journey into the wedding industry is a tale of passion, dedication, and a bit of serendipity. In 2015, I ventured out as a missionary to Africa to help bring a message of hope and support to the nation of Kenya. During this mission, I rediscovered my passion for videography and witnessed just how impactful film and photography can be. My videos received hundreds of thousands of views and inspired countless people.
In 2017, I returned to Maryland to attend a wedding where I had the opportunity to create my first wedding film. As sparks flew, I realized that weddings were the perfect outlet for my creativity. By the end of that year, I had filmed more than 20 weddings and developed brand partnerships with three Maryland photographers. This marked the beginning of TLIC.
Since then, our team has filmed and photographed over 300 couples, all with 5-star reviews. The mission field has changed, but the passion for excellence, appreciation for beauty, and thirst for adventure remain steadfast.
