We were lucky to catch up with Chris Higham recently and have shared our conversation below.
Chris, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Showing clients you appreciate them is something I think most folks want to do – but it’s not always clear how to do it in a meaningful way. What’s one of the best examples of client appreciation you can share with us?
Keep in verbal contact with your clients. In a world full of texts and emails, a quick chat, relevant to them, goes a long way.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As a collector, I realised that I wanted to make art an even bigger part of my life. Doing something you already love, is not difficult. It takes time, effort, and patience, but so does everything worthwhile. My main weakness is tech, so I made sure I had someone who was competent, in all things I was not. You have your ups and downs, forget the downs, concentrate on the ups, and what you did to make them happen.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Being honest, and straightforward. Do what you say you are going to do, as promptly as possible. Pay what you owe on time, or even early. Most importantly… don’t be a dick.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Always make time to thank people who work with you. Everyone has a bad day, sometimes for reasons we do not know. Think about a reprimand, and ponder if it is really necessary. Most people are completely aware if they screwed up, and don’t need it rubbed in their face. Be an employer people enjoy working with, if they do not, they will wander off.
