We were lucky to catch up with Chris Herakovic recently and have shared our conversation below.
Chris, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
My most meaningful project is my large wooden flower. It started out simply as just figuring out how to do it, but through the process it turned into a contemplation of where I was at in life. In just a few short years I was diagnosed with the beginning stages heart failure and my marriage was ended and I was facing homelessness. But, despite the circumstances I came out of this project in a much better, happier place in life.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I always wanted to be involved in the arts, even growing up. While I was in college I worked in construction, and ended up working for a company that had me making furniture, stairs and other architectural millwork. I got to travel, and see so many different influences. I eventually started my own business, where I also designed what I was making. Once I retired, it was suggested that I return to making art. The last four years have been a flood of ideas and inspiration that it’s been hard to find any singular direction, but I’ve always been one to just flow with it.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Some trades have more resources than others, but they are out there, and fairly easy to find if you’re looking. The single best resource that I have found in my short career has been other artists. They don’t pay me, but they have inspired projects, pointed me towards opportunities, encouraged me, critiqued me, and that has been the biggest help in starting this part of my life.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The biggest driver behind me is my internal need to make things. I’ve always had something in me telling me to make something. A lot of my projects have no purpose behind them other than to create something.
