We recently connected with Chris Cote and have shared our conversation below.
Chris, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
It takes persistence, self starting, hunger, want, need, creativity, positivity, self awareness, willingness to work hard, and knowing when to relax, reset, and restart.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Chris Coté is a multi-media action sports personality. As a youngster, he surfed his way from amateur to professional competing on the USA circuit as well as internationally. In 1999 he aided in the start of TransWorld SURF Magazine and became Editor In Chief in 2005—2013. Along the way, he’s worked as a television host, commentator, DJ, roadie, and is now producing, writing, and consulting for various media entities and brands including NBC, ESPN, FUEL TV, Vans, Red Bull, Volcom, World Surf League, Dew Tour, Grind TV, Yew Media, and many more. Currently, Chris is a Play-X-Play specialist for the Vans Park Series alongside Tony Hawk, as well as selected World Surf League events, Red Bull skate and surf broadcasts, Dew Tour Skate, Ski and Snow Broadcasts for NBC, and annual events including the Moto Beach Classic, Switchfoot BroAm, Vans Triple Crown Of Surf, and the Vans US Open Of Surfing. Between events, Chris hosts the wildly popular, Monday M.A.S.S. Podcast with Todd Richards, and is Producer/Anchor on the WSL’s primary multi-channel daily news show, “Surf Breaks”.
Chris is known as one of the only Play-By-Play/Show Hosts who can handle the business of hosting surf, skate, and snow broadcasts with equal knowledge and credibility in all three arenas.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
In 2011 or so, I was spending as much time on side hustles as I was on my main hustle. I was Editor In Chief at TransWorld SURF Magazine as well as a host on FUEL TV, a consultant, an early online content creator, a DJ, a live event host, playing in a band, copy writing for non-endemic clients, and saying yes to every offer that came my way—it was at that moment that I knew all my hustles had to live in the same place., that’s when I started Coté Media Group.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Being real and living the lifestyle I promoted. I surf, skate, snowboard, play music, and my enthusiasm for these pursuits is obvious. I truly love this stuff and I care about every aspect of the culture. I’m protective while also being a big promoter of these pursuits.
