We were lucky to catch up with Chris Corr recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Chris thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Who is your hero and why? What lessons have you learned from them and how have they influenced your journey?
One of my heroes in life, is Dwayne Johnson. Although most know him as “The Rock”, he wasn’t always this heroic and famous figure. At one point, Johnson only had $7 in his pocket when he set out to fulfill his dreams of becoming a pro wrestler. While he ended up fulfilling that dream, he didn’t only do just that. His life story resonates with me as I enjoy hearing about how he was able to conquer success through all odds and from humble beginnings. On top of this, he did not stop once he reached his goal. To me, in life, once you reach the peak of a mountain, you should find a bigger mountain. This is the mentality I go into my life with and the pathway that Johnson paved himself.
Chris, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Chris Corr, and I have been a graphic designer for over 9 years. What sets me apart from most, is that I am self taught. The way I was able to get my start, was I started creating YouTube videos almost a decade ago, and that led to me having to create and design assets for my own channel. Eventually, others started hiring me to design theirs, and it kind of took off from there. Throughout the years, I have been able to work with thousands of clients in all industries, thousands of different types of projects, and create lasting connections that have turned this into a career for me. Currently, I am a graphic designer at The United States Golf Association, and am hoping to build upon having a career in creative within the sports industry. I hope to leave a lasting mark on the industry itself and set new trends, while progressing throughout various roles within the industry. I am most proud of the fact that I was able to teach myself these programs, that has led to me having a career within it and always constantly expanding and developing. On top of this, it is important to myself to recognize that outside of just learning the programs, I had to be my own marketer and salesman to develop my brand which eventually led to landing positions for myself.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I would not say that I have a large following or am an influencer whatsoever, however I was able to establish a network. Over the last few months, I have reached out to hundreds upon hundreds of individuals working within the sports industry and this ultimately led to the role I am currently in. To me, social media is a blessing as it allows for you to truly connect with individuals you may never think you have the chance to connect with. A cold text, email, call, etc, can lead to many different things happening. It might not lead to a role immediately, but every connection brings current and future value.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an creative is that I am able to make visions into reality. Now, this might not be the case at all times, but still the ability to take an idea from my head and create it visually, is a skill that not everyone may have. On top of this, one of the best and rewarding aspects to me is seeing my work in the wild. This may mean a social post, a printed copy, etc, there was a time when I created a poster that was handed out at a Chicago Cubs game, and this experience truly change my life. My artwork not only was used at the game, but appeared on TV, social media, and I was able to attend the game and see hundreds of fans walking around with my artwork in their hands.
