We were lucky to catch up with Chris Clark recently and have shared our conversation below.
Chris, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Folks often look at a successful business and imagine it was an overnight success, but from what we’ve seen this is often far from the truth. We’d love to hear your scaling up story – walk us through how you grew over time – what were some of the big things you had to do to grow and what was that scaling up journey like?
Scaling a business is an exciting yet complex process that requires careful planning and execution. DO NOT SCALE JUST TO SCALE. Scaling without having all your ducks in a row will quickly put you out of business. Here are my top three things to be mindful of when scaling:
1. Strong Foundation: Ensure your business processes, infrastructure, and team are prepared to handle growth without compromising quality.
2. Financial Stability: Monitor cash flow, control expenses, and plan for the financial demands of scaling, such as investments in technology, staff, and marketing.
3. Scalable Systems: Invest in tools and systems that can grow with your business, such as automation software or cloud-based solutions.
Don’t forget the customer, your team, and maker research as well :) Scaling is not just about growing bigger; it’s about growing smarter and sustainably.
Chris, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
For me racket sports has paved the way for me to earn my college education, exciting career possibilities, an opportunity to travel the world, and life-long friendships. With a sports marketing and product background, I am fulfilling my dream through growing participation in all things racket sports. It has been an amazing journey applying my knowledge and experience to the business while seeing it grow throughout the pandemic.— Chris Clark

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Bigger isn’t necessarily better. If your company grows to fast, you will run out of cash. Take your time to learn, and grow the right way by building a strong foundation!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
In 2020, I found myself out of a job in corporate for the first time in 9 years. I have always known that racket sports was my calling. I just needed to figure out how to make an impact or solve a problem. Once I knew the problem, I begin to connect the world through racket sports by providing the best lessons, classes, and events!
