We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Chris Cheetham-West. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Chris below.
Chris, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Alright, let’s jump into one of the most exciting parts of starting a new firm – how did you get your first client who was not a friend or family?
My first client was unexpected. I decided to start a business in 2014. I thought it would be a good idea to start an email newsletter. I started by just sending out information and tips on the services I offered. One tip included how to get better Google rankings. I got a reply from a friend in San Antonio who was a business owner that needed help. This one email resulted in a long-term client!
Chris, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My company provides corporate training solutions to teams that need help with online collaboration and marketing. One of my first jobs was at Google. We went around the country educating people on the power of Google tools and strategies. I enjoyed presenting information to people. I decided that this was something I wanted to do long-term. Since then I have been able to provide servicies for many brands in different countries. I’m happy to help teams who would like to grow their brand.
Have you ever had to pivot?
During the pandemic, everything changed for our industry. Events were quickly canceled and people had to figure out what the next steps were for their business. The way I pivoted included offering virtual training and online solutions. This was a major turning point in my business. Many organizations wanted solutions that can help them in this new online environment.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Initially, I saved money from my jobs to fund my business. I knew that I needed capital for the slow times in business. This proved to be useful right when I went full-time as an entrepreneur. I highly recommend having 6 months worth of expenses before going full-time. You never know what to expect in business. I did wish I had more money in the beginning to put towards marketing and advertising. Getting help from mentors early on can also be beneficial. Mentors can guide you in the right direction quickly!
