We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Chris Castro. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Chris below.
Chris , appreciate you joining us today. So, what do you think about family businesses? Would you want your children or other family members to one day join your business?
I can talk about family business through experiences of my own. People always ask me how long I’ve been doing this, and i told them as early as i could pick up a shovel on the job site I remember running around with my dad and brother hitting job sites picking up trash and doing small grunt work. From there I graduated into tractors and skid steers and then eventually, after college, into project management. This has been all I’ve known for most of my life.
One of the biggest blessings of a family business I would say is that it keeps your family together, or it has at least for us. I get to see my family all the time and I know how lucky I am with that. I think it’s important to give everyone space not only family members but all teammates who are within our organization. I have a lot of trust in my brother and father as they do in me so I never have a doubt they’re doing the absolute best they can for the family business.
One of the downsides about family business is you can never escape it. We always bring up something during every backyard bbq or birthday party. We could be on a beach in Mexico and someone’s going to say something that takes us back to the business real quick.
Growing up it’s not like we never had a choice to go into the family business. We just naturally did because it was too good of an opportunity to pass up. If my daughter decides to join in the business I surely would be proud. I won’t be pushing her into any direction and she certainly won’t be hauling around heavy machinery around in high school like I did. This business much like any other one takes a lot of commitment and a lot of time, but it does bring blessings and flexibility which is another huge benefit of a family business.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Chris Castro and I’m Vice Pesident and Owner of KC Custom Homes. I’ve been doing this professionally for 11 years now, but I’ve helped with our family business for as long as I can remember. We specialize in designing and building homes unique to each family’s lifestyle. Our approach allows us to deliver 100% custom homes while maintaining budgets set at the beginning. We do this by utilizing an in-house architect and guiding the process in a direction we know the end result needs to be. I do all of the estimating and costing myself which also allows me to offer a tremendous amount of value to our clients during the planning stages. There’s no fun in missing budgets and I’m not interested in adding unneeded stress, So it’s extremely important we have a hands on approach to our design process. We’ve been using the same Architect for 26 years now, so I’m very in tune with architectural components in our designs that can move costs. Fortunately because we know our product so well, we are able to start from scratch on every single design and still ensure a home that checks all of the boxes.

How did you build your audience on social media?
My first hire was a college buddy of mine that was just getting into real estate. He knew nothing about the home building industry, but I could tell he had the right attitude to potentially be a good fit for us. As we made adjustments and I did better with delegating, eventually Cameron realized the need for a big social media push. We had a pretty amateur looking Facebook page, and at the time it was the best I could do. Fortunately, Cameron had a natural talent for putting together marketing campaigns. It also helped having gorgeous homes to publicize but that doesn’t matter if you don’t know how to market the product. Cameron cut his teeth and learned as he went and now we have over 30,000 followers across our channels. The best piece of advice I can give is do what other people are having success with. You need a way to stand out from your competition. There will be a lot of money and time invested but remember that this is a long game. It took us several years to get to where we’re at and now we have built quite a reputation in our industry.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The number one best source for new clients for us a referrals. Referrals coming from past clientele are the best for probably any industry. We understand the value in this so we work so hard to keep our clients happy. The majority of my clients come from referrals in the real estate industry whether it’s Realtors, Land Developers, or Lenders it definitely pays to have relationships and maintain those relationships.
