We were lucky to catch up with Chris Burke recently and have shared our conversation below.

Chris, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?

My love for art, all forms of art started at an early age. Whether you are expressing yourself through music, a photo, media, on a physical or human canvas it’s shares your emotions and vision. We facilitate helping our clients express themselves through body art. Creating what is special to them – designed for them. A personalized vision they want to share; whether is a badass, delicate, harsh or private.

Chris, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

I started with graffiti in the streets,a drummer in many different Philly bands, murals for charity, continuously creating art, painting and then I found my passion for tattooing.

I cannot imagine spending my days any other way. An added passion for mentoring young artists to fine tune their skills and increase their craft.

First Hand Tattoo is a home for so many! I have 8 amazing artists on my team. If you visit us you know you will be treated like gold.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?

Worked in an industry year over year that was torture to feed my family and save every penny so that I could open my own shop. My wife and I struggled. It was a huge dream! It is still hard to believe what my team and I created. I am proud everyday when I walk into our shop! Every detail, hand selected and designed. We created a place of tranquility for our clients.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?

I used my reputation as an artist (graffiti vandalism) to get my name out as a tattoo artist, I learned from a few greats and tried to stay true to the real tradition of tattooing.

We stay true to our mission of tattooing the First Hand Tattoo way with a true attention to client needs. Our clients return and refer us, word of mouth has been amazing, we also leverage Facebook, Instagram @firsthandtattoo TIKTOK @firsthandtattooshop
