We were lucky to catch up with Chris Brewer recently and have shared our conversation below.
Chris, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
The idiom “Cloud Nine” has stuck with me since I was a child. It was always something to aspire to— a personal challenge. I am also a sucker for a good alliteration. So Nimbus Nine was born.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have been drawn to art my whole life. My family was not easy to talk to when I had big feelings and art was always there. When I was recovering from an eating disorder, art was there. When I experienced a breakup, art was still there. Any challenge I experienced I could turn to art and feel safe expressing myself.
I focus on fun, magical, and body positive pieces. My hope is that people see themselves reflected in my pieces— especially us midsize and larger bodied people.
I taught myself— through blogs and YouTube videos— a lot of different crafts and styles of art. With the help of my husband and my friends I built my own website and started selling my pieces.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Woof, that’s a big question. Word of mouth honestly is the best way to meet new customers. We trust our friends and family more than strangers on the internet. So, I am grateful for any review or recommendation. I also engage in local area events and markets in my area, which allows me to meet new people and connect with my community in a special way.

Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
I had most of my initial jewelry and art materials before I created my business. I needed capital for everything related to the website, shipping materials, and organization tools. I drove for food delivery apps as a second job for a few months to gather the extra money I needed. Luckily, I didn’t need too much since my shop is online.
