We were lucky to catch up with Chris Bixi Li recently and have shared our conversation below.
Chris Bixi, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I’d say it should be my first feature film, Hide. Hide is a first time feature film made in Los Angeles, a psychological thriller mainly created by a Chinese young female filmmaker, with great help and hard work from so many talented casts and crews from different parts of the world. Hide wants to send its messages to people whoever is encountering dilemmas when facing with choices in life’s path. Hide is running in festivals around the world and looking for. more opportunities to exhibit. to the world.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started making my first narrative short film when I was in high school, and my first short film won the “Best Screenplay” and “Best Picture” that year in my school. The experience of creating the artwork and seeing the final project showing on the big screen and exploring the journey of the story with all of the audience was marvelous. From then on, I knew that being a filmmaker would be my only choice of my career. I am the kind of director that is willing to shoot on my own script. I enjoy creating my own world and showing this to the audience. Music is also something that I am very picky about when I am working with my composers. Having a background of having classical music training for around 20 years, I usually have some special requests for the original soundtrack. And I feel very lucky to have a very talented composer who composed multiple times for me. The communication between us is very efficient since we are speaking the same language in music. Hide’s original soundtrack is a great example.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think it’s dedication, concentration and perseverance. When Hide was just an idea, (even when later on it became a complete script), nobody believed that I would make it happen. Especially even knowing the fact that I am a foreigner in Hollywood and I don’t have any experience making feature-length projects. But step by step, I made it happen. And it even got an award at Toronto International Nollywood Film Festival which just announced to be a Canadian Screen Award Qualifying festival. I’m not a good-talker that can easily market myself and my works very well, but I just try my best to do whatever I can. Then people can choose to believe in me and my work.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I could get access to entertainment law earlier. I was very lucky to have law classes in film school eventually, but I think it should be the very first lesson that everyone took. Law is a great thing to protect everyone’s rights and make sure everyone is behaving respectfully in the society.
