Chris , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I always had a passion for music, words, and poetry in general. Throughout my scholastic years I was always involved in poetry clubs, speech projects and pretty much anything that included public speaking. It was during high school that I really able to sharpen my skills and become comfortable in my craft. Lunch time at my school was notorious for having intense hip-hop cyphers where if one was talented and brave enough to showcase their lyrical skills they could carry the label of master emcee. After astonishing and entertaining crowds in these multiple cyphers I came to the realization that I had a knack for gathering complete strangers together for a specific cause, one that I could control. It was then that I finally knew what I felt I was put on this earth to do, which was to not only be a rapper or hip-hop artist but a professional art creator.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a hip-hop artist/content creator. I pride myself in being able to write music that not only reflects my personal life experiences but issues that others may be going through as well. In my opinion, a good writer not only tells his or her story but posses the ability to be the voice of others. The greatest reward for me is the compliments and positive feedback that I receive from fans and listeners. My overall goal is simply to create music or visual artwork that not only resonates with listeners but tells a story that they can ultimately relate too. After attaining my degree in Mexican-American studies I realized I gained this knowledge to not only further my interest in this field but to assist others in understanding what this culture is and what it means to so many people. My knowledge in this field is what I’m most proud of, for it forms the basis of what my music means and who I am as a person. One of my main dreams is to be able to travel the country, stopping at every college and university to teach, entertain, and inform the masses through the medium of music. There are plenty of artist who’s content is based on material and monetary possessions but I’ve always felt that music with a meaning holds much more weight then music to just dance too and I intend to create as much of it as I can to introduce to the world. That’s what makes me different and sets me apart for others.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The music industry and artwork industry itself is a very competitive industry. It seems like every week there’s a new artist or musician vying for a top position. As in most markets, to take a break is similar to career suicide. The revolving door stops for no one and only those with the strongest will power and perseverance will survive. It is my personal opinion that those who have experienced struggle and opposition at early stages of their life are the ones better prepared for problems that may arise later on in their career. I am no different. I was raised in the impoverished and low-income areas of my community which helped me develop a tougher skin, a some-what impenetrable defense to procrastination, complacency, and negative thinking. I’ve always felt a sense of responsibility to uplift and speak for my community and the people that encompass my surroundings. My only goal and mission is to be respectable representative of my community and leader that my people can look to for help in any situation.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Music, digital artwork, performance art and poetry are all forms of seasonings that give societies it’s flavor. Every year budget cuts to school curriculums, city funding and government programs decrease the spirit of these mediums and overall hinder the growth of people as a society. It’s through these projects that we humans as a whole learn about ourselves mentally, physically, and spiritually. Self-expression is the ultimate form of growth that we as humans need in order to develop into a higher consciousness. The best way to increase the volume and reach of these mediums is garner more interest and opportunities for those who are interested in pursuing a career in any one of these fields. Cities and states need to set aside more funding for programs to teach these skills and buildings to host such events for all creative artist to showcase their talents and develop career building expertise.
