We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Choyce Schwartz a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Choyce, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Sometimes in life you have to be willing to take risks. That includes sacrifices. When I was in college working multiple jobs I had to risk not making enough money to invest more time into my craft, spending more hours in the studio, and interning without pay in order to learn from the best in my field. Overtime I grew into my craft gaining experience and honing my skills. When I focused on the commitment to my work that’s when the money came and it eventually became my full-time career. Taking risks in music has helped me make it into not only a career but a life I can enjoy while not feeling like work.
Choyce, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Choyce, I’m a musician, model, and creative visionary. Over the years I’ve had the opportunity to work in many different industries including music, film, and fashion industry. I began my career back in college as a songwriter, producer and drummer. After my internship, I became a full-time songwriter and producer. Outside of composing music for popular artists and TV/film, I expanded more into the business side as a music manager and A&R consultant. After gaining a fan base through my work in music it helped me become an influencer in which opened the door for me to pursue modeling and partner with brands as an influencer. When I am not making music or modeling, I’m designing visual artworks for music artists’ projects and helping develop marketing campaigns for brands.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When I was a freshman in high school, my math teacher said music was a waste of time and that I’d get no where pursuing that career. I didn’t know what exactly I wanted to do in the music industry but I knew after that day, there was nothing that was going to hold me back.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A major lesson I had to unlearn was to not allow others’ rejection to determine your own worth. In the entertainment industry you’re going to face a lot of “no’s” before you get a “yes”, but you can’t allow that to stop you. All it takes is just one opportunity to see worth taking a shot on you, you just have to be confident in yourself. I used to rely on others opinions to define me and it sometimes stopped me from believing in myself. When I finally let that all go and found assurance in myself, it changed the game for me.
