Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Chong Kim. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Chong, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
In over 20 years shifting from advocacy to creative artistry, I’ve faced mischaracterization. When my history of trauma or disability is revealed, I’m often seen as strong for overcoming obstacles in my life, yet not strong enough to contribute fully to the cause. Underestimation of my capabilities is common, which is frustrating. Despite limited mobility, it doesn’t impede my creative work or advocacy; instead, it fuels innovative thinking. I seek not special treatment but rather the opportunity to pursue my goals without being hindered by physical limitations or met with pity.
Chong, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have triumphed over abuse and trafficking, initially starting as a volunteer in legal advocacy. Upon learning about human trafficking and the denial of American women and girls as victims, I became vocal. My personal story attracted local media attention, leading Hollywood to produce ‘Eden,’ a film featuring Beau Bridges and Jamie Chung. This sparked my journey into public speaking, educating on trafficking, offering hope to survivors of trauma, violence, and trafficking. The film’s impact inspired me to delve into storytelling, sharing my experiences to empower others. Despite facing underestimation in filmmaking, I formed my team, honed my skills, and delved into business aspects. My unwavering perseverance since 2005, coupled with keen observation and faith, drives me forward. I view challenges as opportunities, guided by the motto: “To avenge your oppressors, become the success they never envisioned.” My disability hasn’t hindered my dreams, showcasing that resilience conquers all.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
In the aftermath of my trafficking ordeal, survivor resources were scarce from the 1990s to 2015, with limited support continuing to this day, particularly in housing. Post-escape, lacking identification posed a significant challenge despite being naturalized. Unable to access welfare, I resorted to illicit means to survive, including selling drugs and engaging in risky exchanges for basic needs. Homelessness forced me to move between shelters, relying on public transport for mobility. Uncertainty about meals and shelter led me to desperate measures like sleeping in gas station bathrooms and cemeteries to avoid harm. Enduring assaults and abuse as a homeless woman shaped my resilience. These adversities fueled my transformation into a business leader, influencer, and advocate, emphasizing humility and perseverance. Despite lacking formal education, my journey instilled invaluable real-world skills, fostering gratitude for the unconventional path I’ve embraced.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My aim is to revolutionize how we perceive American girls and boys affected by Human Trafficking. Current focus tends to favor victims with media appeal, neglecting those from foster care, impoverished backgrounds, victims of racial discrimination, or abuse, who are unfairly stigmatized by society. No one chooses abuse or victimization. Through my film project, I aim to eliminate victim incarceration, advocating for education and rehabilitation. Survivors deserve support, not punishment, as they have endured significant challenges and require assistance. Furthermore, I seek to broaden creative opportunities for survivors and individuals with disabilities.
