Chloe, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Joining this industry was my biggest risk yet. Flashback to May of 2020, I had just graduated high school. I was thrilled to begin my college experience in the fall. Looking forward to cheering at Pitt State and making my parents happy by continuing my education in nursing. I had always known I wanted to be a hairstylist but my parents had always told me that I needed to go to “real school” to be successful and gain the “whole experience”. So that is just what I had planned to do! I felt like I had my whole life in front of me, what could go wrong? A few short weeks later I discovered I was pregnant. 18, scared, and feeling like I just crashed into a wall and my whole life is now in shambles. What do I do?? I was terrified. Of course, all of my plans changed from that moment on. The fall came and instead of the university life I was looking forward to, I switched to the local community college. I began working full time at a job working late nights so that I could support my baby. I was 18, a single mom, and just trying to figure it all out to be the best mom I could be. Exhausted, unhappy, and just a child herself. February came, and my sweet Cali Grace was born. She lit a fire in me that nothing else on this earth could. I knew I could be whoever I wanted to be and do whatever I wanted to do in this life once I held that sweet girl for the first time. I went back to school, sometimes bringing Cali to class with me but I knew that this was going to be my last year. Finally, the school year had ended and I had a huge decision to make. I knew I didn’t want to be a nurse. I never had! The only reason I was following that career path was to please others around me, but what about me? I had two options. Go back to school in the fall and continue doing something I didn’t love or enroll in cosmetology school. I was nervous, I didn’t want my family to be disappointed in me, I was afraid of not being able to provide for my daughter. Did you know when you google the salary of a hairstylist, it shows that the average salary is 28k a year? What about a nurse? 80k a year. The Google searches alone scared me but I knew I could do this and I knew I could be successful. I was willing to do whatever it took to give me and my daughter the best life possible. I enrolled in Paul Mitchell that August. I finished the program and began working under Laurabeth At Artistry by LB. I assisted for a year learning all of the tips and tricks behind the scenes in the industry. I took continuing education to guarantee I had the skills and techniques that were in demand. I worked early mornings and late nights, and after a year of assisting, I was ready to become an independent stylist. The time passes fast but I am proud to say I am in my second year as an independent stylist bringing in six figures. This life is truly my dream come true and I would not be here today without taking that risk.

Chloe, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi everyone! I am Chloe Mohn, a 22 year old hairstylist, mother, and business owner. I began this journey in August of 2020 with a baby on my hip and diving in head first all by myself. I attended Paul Mitchell the School where I completed my 1500 hours as fast as I could. I was so eager to get my hands in hair and create magic on each guest that sat in my chair. I knew from the time I began school that I wanted to assist Laurabeth Artistry at Artistry by LB. I set a goal for myself and come August of 2021 I was Laurabeth’s full time assistant and began taking my very first few clients on the weekends at Artistry. I was working Monday-Saturday, assisting, taking clients, and accepting every single opportunity that was given to me. The next year I worked everyday at reaching my dream clientele and growing my books.
I have always been passionate for blonding and extensions. the confidence you give a client after giving them the length and volume they have been dreaming of is one of the best feelings. April of 2022, I invested in the Harper Ellis extension method and this class in itself has changed my career and life completely. Since 2022, I have mastered the craft of the hidden bead extensions. I am confident when I say I offer the most seamless, damage free, hidden bead extensions to the Kansas City area. This speciality is what I am most passionate about in this industry.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Absolutely! I always say that I don’t care if you have 2 followers or 2 million followers. Post every day like you have a fans who are waiting for your new post! This way of thinking has made my business and social media soar. Creating content that clients can relate with and posting daily is going to get people to recognize you and feel like that can relate to you on a personal level. Another important thing to include on your social media is to show your face! including reels, photos, and content with your face in it and not just content of your work is going to help your audience feel like they know you before they even meet you!

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being in a creative and artistic industry is the reaction on my clients face at the end of the appointment and the relationship we create after entrusting me in something that can control someones entire confidence. I have shed tears with clients who have went through recent trauma and felt safe to share with me, clients who have been struggling with recent hair loss and have been transformed with extensions, and just creating a bond that turns clients into close friends. When a client sits in my chair, we can spend anywhere from two to eight hours together. Creating that bond with my clients and having them put their trust in to me is the most rewarding aspect of this career.
