We were lucky to catch up with Chloe Maleski recently and have shared our conversation below.
Chloe, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the best advice you ever gave to a client? How did they benefit / what was the result? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
I firmly believe that the journey of learning is perpetual, and we are all in a constant state of apprenticeship. There is always more knowledge to acquire, skills to hone, and perspectives to understand. In my personal and professional experience, I have found that internships and effective mentorship play pivotal roles in one’s journey toward success.
While I have developed expertise in Sport Psychology and Mental Skills, I am currently engaged in a practicum at Arizona State University, working with their student-athletes. This endeavor is part of my pursuit to become licensed as a clinical social worker. I made the deliberate decision to return to school for this additional qualification because I recognize the intricate relationship between mental health and overall well-being.
From personal experience as a collegiate student-athlete, I understand firsthand the importance of addressing mental health concerns alongside performance optimization. Mental health exists on a spectrum, encompassing not only challenges but also opportunities for growth, resilience, and flourishing. I aim to support individuals across this spectrum, providing comprehensive care that acknowledges the interconnectedness of mental health and performance.
By combining my expertise in sports psychology with clinical social work training, I aspire to offer holistic support to individuals navigating the complexities of mental health and performance enhancement. I am driven by the belief that every individual deserves access to quality mental health care, particularly in high-stakes environments such as collegiate athletics.
In essence, my journey as a practitioner is characterized by a commitment to continuous learning, a dedication to interdisciplinary collaboration, and a passion for empowering individuals to thrive both on and off the field. I am deeply grateful for the opportunities that have shaped my professional path thus far, and I look forward to the ongoing process of growth and development as I strive to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those I serve.
Chloe, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
The short story of how I got into Sports Psychology. I got a scholarship to run track at Duke University and choked! I wanted to figure out what went wrong, and time and time again it came back to mental health and performance. From my perspective, a huge underutilized resource for athletes. It’s what separates good athletes, from great athletes.
Since Duke, I have worked in the wellness space connecting all the dots. This included being a personal trainer at Equinox, becoming a board-certified health coach, gaining my master’s in psychology from Pepperdine, and continuing to experience and walk the talk myself.
For the past three years, I have worked for Dr. Hastins, the sports psychologist for the LA Rams, alongside running my business and working two days a week with the student-athletes and teams at Arizona State University.
I’m someone deeply committed to helping athletes unearth their true potential while fostering sustainable growth. Currently, my days are split between two electrifying roles: nurturing the psychological fortitude of the LA Rams as part of their sports psychology team and weaving my magic with the talented student-athletes and teams at Arizona State University.
But there’s more to me than just these roles. You’ll often find me sweating it out in the world of hybrid fitness, pushing my own limits as I strive for excellence alongside those I coach.
My approach to coaching is all about holistic athlete development—it’s about blending visualization techniques, mindfulness practices, stress-busting strategies, and cognitive behavioral performance methods into a seamless tapestry. I’m not just here to enhance athletic performance; I’m here to elevate overall well-being and enrich lives.
What lights my fire for this work? It’s rooted in my own collegiate journey as a distance runner at Duke University—a journey that wasn’t always a highlight reel. But post-graduation, I dove headfirst into a relentless pursuit of understanding, merging ongoing training, competition, and scholarly exploration to decode the mysteries of athletic performance. This quest led me to pursue a Master’s in Clinical Psychology, dive into the world of nutrition through the Primal Health Coach Institute, and snag certification as a personal trainer. It was this fusion of diverse disciplines that unlocked the secrets of the mind-body connection for me, propelling me to new heights beyond college.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Consistency is the cornerstone of success. It’s about steadfastly showing up and putting in the work, day in and day out. In a landscape where new businesses often come and go, staying power is earned through relentless dedication. It’s easy for people to speculate about when a venture might fail, but the truth is, that success isn’t determined by luck or fleeting bursts of motivation.
To truly thrive, you have to commit to the grind even when you’re not feeling particularly inspired. Motivation is fickle; it ebbs and flows, and we can’t rely on it to sustain us 24/7. Instead, it’s consistency—the discipline to keep pushing forward, even when the going gets tough—that ultimately prevails. It’s the daily habits, the small steps taken consistently over time, that build momentum and lead to lasting success.
So, while others may wonder about the longevity of new businesses, those who understand the power of consistency know that success isn’t a question of if, but when. By embracing the principle of consistency, we lay the foundation for enduring achievement and fulfillment in our endeavors.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the most valuable lessons I impart is the art of leveraging mistakes for personal growth. From a young age, we’re often conditioned to perceive mistakes as failures, something to be avoided at all costs. However, I firmly believe that mistakes serve as invaluable guides on our journey towards success.
Contrary to popular belief, making mistakes isn’t indicative of incompetence or inadequacy; rather, it signals our willingness to push beyond our comfort zones and explore new territories. Each misstep offers a unique opportunity for learning and improvement, providing us with insights that can’t be gleaned through smooth sailing alone.
By reframing our perspective on mistakes, we transform them from stumbling blocks into stepping stones. They become powerful catalysts for growth, propelling us forward on the path to mastery and achievement. Embracing mistakes not only builds resilience but also fosters a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.
Ultimately, learning to embrace and learn from mistakes is a fundamental skill that empowers us to navigate life’s challenges with confidence and resilience. It’s a mindset shift that not only fuels personal growth but also paves the way for greater success and fulfillment in all aspects of our lives.
