We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Chloe Luo. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Chloe below.
Chloe, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with the decision of whether to donate a percentage of sales to an organization or cause – we’d love to hear the backstory of how you thought through this.
When I started the business, I always wanted to give donations to help the community. I believe the customer support my small business to let me grow and I will give partial profit to help the community and make the world better. I donate 5% of all sales to non-profit organizations every season and will change different non-profit organizations to donate yearly. I usually choose local and small non-profit organizations because as a small businesse, we don’t have as many resources and budgets as big corporations, and the same as local organizations.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am originally from Taiwan and relocated to San Francisco in 2010 to pursue a master’s degree. After school, I got a job in a boutique as a store manager. When I work in the store, I found passion in jewelry. But I had a hard time to find the one delicate and affable jewelry for myself. So I decided to start my jewelry line journey.
I am always fascinated by the nature of a classic feather pen, also known as Quill. I inspired by the delicate yet powerful and timeless writing tool, same as Quill Fine Jewelry. I fouces on light weight, affordable quality accessories that never go out of style. Before I launch every collections, I will do more research, design and testing with my team to make sure the jewelry are truelly hypoallergenic and stable quality.
The ordinary can reveal quite magical occasions. I get inspiration from life. Every day is unique and meaningful, just like our community. My jewelry are the sparkle of my life!

Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
Because I work in and have a small business, I know how much Amazon hurts the local retail industry. Since I also do wholesale for brick-and-mortar, I think It is a win-win situation that we support each other. In addition, we can also build and protect the local community.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
I started the business when I still worked in a boutique full time as a store manager. I have to do all the work after I off from my full time job, such as making jewelry, researching marketing in any ways, website management and applying for the local craft fairs.
At first, I got reject from some of the bigger craft fairs, but I just kept applying. Eventully, I not only got into small craft fairs, but attended some major trend shows. I also try to resolve any questions or problems that customers have. And I ship all of my orders as soon as possible to let the customers satisfied the shipping and shopping experience.
When I attend to the craft fairs, I will walk around and meet other vendors therefore I can build the connections and support each other.
