We recently connected with Chiquita Dennie and have shared our conversation below.
Chiquita, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I wanted to pursue a creative path professionally during college. My major started out toward being a lawyer, but I started taking filmmaking and writing classes and fell in love with the creative process.
Chiquita, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I graduated from college with a degree in film production and moved to Los Angeles and started working in the film industry. Being on set of different shows from American Idol, Dr. Phil Show and many more I started to become more creative on the writing side and wrote my own projects. Once that happened I ended up transitioning into publishing books from some of my screenplays. Now seven years later I’m doing book signings and meeting more of my readers in person.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Society could open up more doors for creatives and artists, especially people of color. When applying for grants, or business loans, it shouldn’t be difficult or require a lot of information especially if they know this is your first time trying to grow a business. Have a solid team to support the business owner from not only how to trademark, have a lawyer teach about investing in your brand, but down to the basic marketing of your brand.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect is meeting my readers in person. Sometimes you get in a headspace and feel like no one is really taking to your craft, but I’ve seen and met people in person that love my work. Sharing that experience is magical that my words means something to a reader.
