We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Chilla Pertilla. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Chilla below.
Chilla, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How do you feel about asking friends and family to support your business? What’s appropriate, what’s not? Where do you draw the line?
I believe it’s good to advertise your business or even special promotions to family & friends, but the constant bombardment and/or “tag spamming” (as I like to refer to it) is totally inappropriate and quite lazy, to be honest. I genuinely don’t consider my friends and family as my target group or customers—they are my family & friends. It’s absolutely unethical to make your friends and/or family feel guilty and primarily responsible for your success or failure—that’s your job! I’ve often had many posts go viral, if you will, and not once did it involve me tag-spamming my friends list. In fact, most people see minimal gains with that strategy. So I’d say this: just love and enjoy your family & friends and keep your business separate. All friends and family that choose to support you are just icing on the cake.

Chilla, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a cinematographer, photographer, graphic designer, and content creator. I have been in the creative industry for more than 20 years and have worked with countless major companies. I’m also a full-time father to three children. My website, chillapertilla.com, is an online portfolio of my work as a creative professional. It showcases my skills as a cinematographer, photographer, and graphic designer, as well as my ability to create engaging content for digital media platforms. My Brand Is Emag which is the word Game spelled in reverse, because we take all the guess work and games out and deal straight with the obvious.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, being a creative means I get to tell a story, sometimes my side of the story, but nonetheless, a story. I get to help businesses tell their stories, or help organizations solve problems. Most importantly of all, I love being able to bring awareness to community events and programs. Some of the most rewarding projects I’ve worked on are truly just passion projects.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I feel that my whole career journey illustrates my ability to believe in and achieve the unattainable. A rap artist from Muskegon, MI, making it on platinum records (yeah right). A guy from Muskegon who struggled through school, even getting expelled from the entire district, could become a well-established businessman in the same community. Subsequently, with no help from the community or local government whatsoever, I continue to excel and grind. West Michigan isn’t exactly a flourishing place for minorities, but I’m hopeful for a changing climate.
