We recently connected with Chidozie Adindu and have shared our conversation below.
Chidozie, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I am currently featured as a recurring character on a TV show titled “KoldxWindy”. The show centers around two Chicago female rappers who are looking to use their music as a way to rise up and out of their current situations. Facing the day to day struggles of living on the South side of Chicago, they use the current popular drill music as a way of expressing their feelings and dealings in order to shed light on their reality. As a Chicago Native, I feel it is definitely time for the world to be exposed to truths and happenings that go on in the city. There has been tv shows and movies in the past that touched on a few subjects and insights but nothing really factual and detailed.
I am proud to be a part of this project, not just because I am a rapper from Chicago. I appreciate the fact that it exposes the truth about what goes on in our city. Also, in my opinion, shedding light on these truths is the first step to helping a lot of people heal from the mishaps we witness.
Chidozie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been living in Atlanta, GA. for about 9 years now. I moved here from Jackson Ms. with intent to grow my career as an artist/entertainer. In Jackson I attended Thee Jackson State University where I graduated with Cum Laude honors and a 4 year degree in Business Management, which I finished in 3 years. During my matriculation, I spent 90% of my time with the on campus organization: MADDRAMA. MADDRAMA is a performance troupe that concentrates on making a difference doing respectable and meaningful arts. It was with this group that I learned many things about myself. First, I learned that I am an actor and talented performer. Secondly, I learned that anyone can be a successful entertainer, no matter your background, race or gender. I also learned many other things. Among these things, I learned that I will never finish learning the craft of entertainment. Performance is a muscle that must forever be developed. Anything you want to be great at, you must never stop working on it. The more you put in to it, sets the platform for you to receive more from it.
My brand is one of tenacity, diligence, persistence and greatness. Confidence and knowing self is a must to survive in this industry. As actors, we audition for hundreds of roles while we might book just one. Therefore, tough skin and consistency are a driving force that I carry with me within my character. I am one who would rather over achieve and be overrated, than to fall short and not rank up to my standards. It’s okay to aim higher than you can imagine yourself landing. Eventually, your skill set and reality will catch up to your imagination.
I am most proud of my 2 kids. Xandyn(12) and Heavyn(11) are my greatest accomplishments. During the summer of 2022 I was able to see them progress through theatre camp at Red Light Performing Arts Company summer program. They were able to work under and learn from upcoming director and actor Rob Demery. Please know that everything I do is for them, my family and generations to come.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
A particular story of resilience and staying true to self that I will like to share is one where many may disagree with me. In 2020, we all faced the struggles of a pandemic. From this we also faced a dilemma where we had to make a choice. This choice involved either agreeing to take the vaccine or not. Within the film industry, many productions were not able to continue filming without 100% vaccinated cast and crew. Personally, I chose not to consent to being vaccinated. I was presented with 2 or more opportunities that could have been the biggest opportunities of my life at that time. However, I chose to stick with my understanding and principles. Although, I knew my agent spent time and effort getting me the auditions and opportunities, I had her to decline offer letters, due to me not agreeing to being vaccinated. I am one who is not okay with letting others down, especially when they are my supporters. Many actors will tell you those opportunities were not common and other chances were not guaranteed. I still had faith in myself and my God. A year or more later I booked the biggest opportunity of my career with a production where the vaccination was not mandated.
Remember, a blessing delayed is not a blessing denied.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I saw two major pivots in my career during the 2020 pandemic and right now during the current “writer’s/actor’s” strike within the film industry.
What is even greater than these things is my understanding.
Things are not always going to go my way. They don’t have to. The path is not always going to be clear. It doesn’t have to be. I am not always going to know what’s best. I don’t always have to know. However, I always have to be consistent and have faith. You nor myself have ever been through a thing that we didn’t overcome. No matter what we have been through or complained about, it didn’t defeat us. It didn’t defeat us because we are still here. There are many good/great people who are no longer with us. On the contrary, we are still here, I believe, for a reason. Everything we go through is made to build and mold us for the next level in our lives. We survived it for a reason. These situations teaches us something that is going to be valuable on the next steps leading to our goals.
