We were lucky to catch up with Cheyenne Clements recently and have shared our conversation below.
Cheyenne, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
The idea for CM Bakery started back in 2019. There was a local Pinots Pallet that was offering a cookie decorating class. I sent the Facebook invite to my best friend, she had just had her first child and needed to get out of the house. So, we had a girls night, attended the class and to both our surprise, decorating a sugar cookie came so natural to me. I took that class in November, it was Thanksgiving themed, and that following January I launched CM Bakery. I created a CM Bakery instagram account and facebook page.
I took a chance a made some Valentines Day themed cookies for pre-order on my instagram starting in January 2020. Looking back at those first initial cookies I made to sell, I cringe! BUT, I did end up selling about 15 Valentines Day cookie sets. The set included: 2 lip shaped cookies, and 3 heart shaped cookies with different designs on them.
I started posting in my local area Facebook groups, sharing on my personal pages, and asking friends and family to spread the word. I was selling cookies by the dozen for $35 and my husband thought that was a crazy amount for cookies and said “who is ever going to pay $3 for a cookie!”. Look who is laughing now when I am doubled my price per dozen since then.
I slowly started to build up clients, most orders I was getting was from people I knew or a friend of a friend and now I am getting orders from clients who I don’t know, which is the coolest feeling! As of now, 2023 has been my busiest year to date with orders increasing each month.
Over the last few years, my decorating skills have significantly improved but it is such a cool thing to look back on some of the first few cookie sets I made and look how far I have come.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Cheyenne and I am the owner of CM Bakery. This has forever been a dream of mine and with the push of friends and family, it has come to life!
I specialize in custom decorated sugar cookies and I have perfected my sugar cookie recipe to have the perfect bite – not too hard, not too chewy! These cookies are great for any occasion – whether you are hosting an event or just want something to surprise your significant other, these are for you.
I am so thankful to everyone who as pushed me to follow my dream and to every single client who has supported that dream!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Having a quality cookie that not only looks great but also tastes great. I have a lot of loyal clients that recommend the bakery weekly when someone is looking for decorated sugar cookies.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Using social. media has been the best way for me to grow my clientele. I try my best to keep up with posting regularly and sending out email campaigns.
