Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Cheterra McCray . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Cheterra , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?

To begin with, a lot of what I know is from watching TV and movies! I know that sounds a bit indolent, but I always looked at it as a way of studying. Then as I got further into my pursuit of acting, I started to actually read more about my craft and study different techniques from actors before me. To me, the most essential skill I learned was character breakdown. It allows me to dive into character in ways I never have before.

Cheterra , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

So, my name is Cheterra McCray and I’m an actress and filmmaker based in Chicago, IL. Myself and three of my close friends form the production team, The Film Spot, where we pride ourselves in telling black, innovative, stories that defy the norm. The thing I’m most proud of is this team! Representation is so important and we work so hard in making sure our stories are told creatively and authentically. We have a new web series that we will be releasing soon on Youtube called WEBS! It’s an anthropology series that centers around a specific theme while remaining unrelated to the previous story! Can’t wait for fans to check it out!

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?

Be original! I think a lot of times, we tend to drift towards what’s easy or what’s agreeable but the point of art is to invoke conversations and thoughts whether it be good or bad. It doesn’t matter because it’s suppose to make you think regardless. I think as a society, we are losing our drive for that. For curiosity and wonder.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?

My grandma has believed I could be a star for as long as I can remember and my only goal is for her to be able to see me on the screen of one of her favorite TV programs!
