We were lucky to catch up with Cheryl Clarke recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Cheryl , thanks for joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
My mission for Speak Your Power Now is for people to feel empowered to speak their truth and find the voice they may have lost due to traumatic experiences. In my life, I found that I lost my voice. I grew up in a home with an emotionally abusive stepfather calling me a ‘dumb mother f’er,’ every day. Due to that traumatic verbiage, I was muted and felt powerless. I had to learn how to find my power. As I began to do this self-search, I noticed that I was struggling with anxiety and low self-esteem. My own struggles with anxiety and low self-esteem led me to explore psychology. Working in the field of psychology, I noticed that there were a great number of people who also struggled with finding their voices. It’s what led me to create the Speak Your Power Now platform.

Cheryl , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Cheryl Clarke, wife of Gregory Clarke of over 26 years, and mother of 6 young adult children. As it relates to my career and calling; I am a woman on a mission to help others find and excel in their purpose. I am able to do this through different avenues such as; being a minister, a psychotherapist, and most of all, being deeply connected to my spiritual roots. Being connected to my spiritual roots ties it all together and gives me the ability to properly navigate my divine assignment.
I got started in coaching over 10 years ago when I was afforded the opportunity to work in the public sector. I was able to have a diverse population of people and families that I was able to provide therapeutic interventions. I gained a great amount of experience in that area and I noticed a pattern in people struggling with being stuck in their communication. I was able to witness that there were significant breakdowns in the family units, and in the individuals. This led me to become a psychotherapist and communication coach where I began to connect the psych world and the coaching world to be able to help people from being unstuck, which resulted in Speak Your Power Now.
Speak Your Power Now is where I provide a program that helps people find their voice. I created a method called the PIES Method that provides individuals with 4 easy steps to become unstuck from any type of communication.
P- Pause
I – Identity
E – Explore
S – Solution
If individuals would like to pursue further into the PIES method I have a coaching program that allows hands-on guidance to become unstuck.
Everyone tells me that I have a unique way of getting to the point. I have branded myself as a solution-focused therapist/coach. What that means is that you don’t have to be with me for long periods of time but you are there to create particular results in your life and a plan on how to get there. I uniquely take a little psychology and a few practically focused tools along with my personal experience to form a map of execution. I tell it like it T-I-is. Clients like my kinder and authenticity which causes them to feel safe and open to receiving guidance from me.
I am most proud of the fact that I am a girl from the Bronx that learned a couple of life-altering tools. As a young girl, I developed the ideology that I was stupid and could never be anything. Now that I have surpassed those limitations, I am able to show others that they can do it too. It doesn’t matter where you are from, or if you have disabilities or communication barriers. You have a purpose. Because of my spiritual principles and guidance, I am able to be a voice and advocate for others to find their purpose.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I remember one day my mother said to me, ‘don’t come back to the house, we will be staying with your grandparents because we are getting evicted.’ At that age, I didn’t know what being evicted was. I remember running home to find out what was going on and I saw people taking my pearly white bedroom set and putting it on a truck. My mother came out with a shopping cart to hold our things as we walked to my grandparent’s home. For the entire four years while in high school, I slept on a mattress, on the floor, in a one-bedroom apartment. Despite those circumstances, I was able to graduate on time while working to pay for my tuition for the catholic school I was attending. I didn’t know how resilient I was until then. It was also around the time that I met my now husband. I learned that growth and new opportunities could result from difficult circumstances. times.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I have a childcare business as well. I recall someone else decided to open up a childcare facility on the same block as my own. It was three doors down from me but the owner facilitated outside my door and handed out fliers. As you know, people love the “new” thing. I went from having 16 children to having 4 on my roster. I had to really pivot in order to combat that loss. This process lasted for about 16 months but ultimately my neighbor’s childcare business got shut down. After that happened, my facility was back at the capacity it was before. Fortunately, I had savings and prayer that kept me through that process. I was also able to supplement during that time by doing training for daycare providers. That was my pivot and worked out very well for me.
