We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chernisse Butcher a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Chernisse, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
I made the bold decision to transition from a structured job to freelance stylist assistant work at the onset of COVID, a decision full with uncertainty. I understood the need to take risks and network within the fashion and creative industry. The opportunity presented itself with the guidance of Timothy Luke, then a fashion stylist assistant under Anna Trevelyn. Initially starting as an intern, I crossed paths with Cornelius Lafayette during a Nike campaign, who became my mentor, introducing me to various creatives in the industry. This led me to Katelyn Gray, a NYC-based stylist, who broadened my perspective on the commercial aspect of styling. Another pivotal mentor, Jennifer Telford, lead fashion stylist at Tailored Brands Inc., provided me with a contracted role as a freelance stylist assistant, specializing in menswear. Despite the challenges over the past four years, including periods of uncertainty, I’ve embraced the freelance journey, finding balance and gratitude in every experience. The support and guidance of mentors have shaped my understanding of both the creative and business facets of styling, allowing me to build a stable career while fostering genuine connections in the industry. This organic networking approach has been integral to my unique journey, one I wouldn’t rush or alter, as it has been perfectly tailored to my growth and development.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

This journey has allowed me to collaborate with numerous creatives, expanding my professional network .
My portfolio includes editorial work for renowned publications such as 10 and 10Men Magazine (London based), Teen Vogue, and Essence. Additionally, I’ve contributed to campaign commercials for brands like Men’s Wearhouse, Jos. A. Bank, John Hardy, Tiffany and Co.,Aveda, Keds, Warby Parker, and Old Navy, among others.
Throughout my career, I’ve accumulated valuable industry insights from mentors and diverse project experiences. I pride myself on being detail-oriented, organized, and possessing an easy-going personality, all while striving for perfection in my craft.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most fulfilling aspect of being a creative is the freedom to express oneself openly. Within the fashion industry, I not only have the chance to connect with a diverse range of individuals and fellow creatives, but I also find that being surrounded by like-minded individuals passionate about the same craft enhances the creative process. Interacting with fashion stylists, photographers, hair and makeup artists, as well as production teams, helps me cultivate a supportive community where I can explore my creativity without fear of judgment.
Additionally, as a freelancer, I value the flexibility to set my own schedule, allowing me to tailor my lifestyle to suit my needs and maximize my creative output.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
In terms of resources, I regret not learning about the business aspects of freelancing earlier. Utilizing apps for timekeeping, invoicing, and budgeting has proven invaluable. Moreover, grasping the importance of proper financial planning, particularly saving, has been crucial, given the fluctuating nature of freelance work. Mastering these elements has significantly influenced how I navigate and manage my career as both a freelancer and a creative professional.
