We recently connected with Cherise Klosner and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Cherise , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
Back in 2020 when I decided to take my love for wedding officiating from side hustle to full time business I knew I had to come up with an official name. It honestly never occurred to me to use just my name. I wanted something catchy but not corny. At that time I had been to my fair share of weddings and had repeatedly heard the song “Another One Bites The Dust” by Queen played as the couple walks back down the aisle after tying the knot, thus Another One Ties The Knot was born. I absolutely love when I tell people the name of my business and their faces light up with total recognition of the play on words.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My admiration for the wedding officiant came during my own wedding. My husband and I planned a full scale wedding in under a month and my best friend knew a guy (Pastor Mike) who could officiate. I hadn’t given it much thought and just expected that he would say what he needed to make us legally married. I was completely blown away during our ceremony to hear him deliver the most beautiful words that were nothing at all like I had imagined. A few years later I was given the opportunity to officiate our friends wedding and I wanted to make sure that they had the same feeling I had. The feeling of hearing the beauty in their own love story and how that brought them to the precise moment of joining their lives in marriage. The moment for me was electric. I want couples to know that I fully understand that hiring a stranger to share your love story may seem awkward but it is super important to me that we (myself and the couple) get to know each other beyond the professional surface level. By the time their wedding day rolls around we are now all friends, laughing, crying, and enjoying every minute of their ceremony AND I handle all of their legal documents with professionalism and care. It’s the best of both worlds!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think one of the biggest advantages I had in starting my business is that I had no idea what I was doing. Stay with me on this one. When Covid-19 hit I was laid-off from my job and not sure I wanted to return if and when the world opened back up. I took a leap of faith and opened an Instagram account to promote my wedding officiating services and low and behold I started getting inquiries. Many couples had to pivot their large wedding plans and elope instead which meant all they needed was an officiant. I’ll never forget when the first couple reached out to me asking if I would officiate their elopement at Ruby Beach in Forks, WA. I was shocked and thought “who me?” At that time I hadn’t even realized how popular eloping and what I soon learned “adventure eloping” was but my willingness to go forth catapulted me into view. I was able to meet so many photographers and even wedding planners who specialize in elopements that allowed me to enter the massive world of weddings through the front door rather than way in the back. I am forever grateful for that year of opportunity.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I either hear folks say that social media is hard and they don’t know how to use it or it’s overwhelming feeling the need to be present each day. I look at social media as a social moment. It absolutely helps to grow your business but if I’m not feeling super social I just don’t hop on that day. I keep it as simple as that because I do enjoy social media. I like TikTok to pass the time or even learn recipes, restaurants, places to visit, dances I have no business trying. I like Instagram to connect with other wedding and business professionals and of course new clients. I like Facebook to see what my mom is up to or check updates for our 20 year high school reunion (omg). Facebook is also great for joining professional groups in your area. They all serve a little bit of a different purpose but the main thing is connection. For me deciding what I want to share on social media is also something I break into bite size pieces. I have separate personal and business accounts to protect the privacy of my family but I will say that no matter how I show up I do so as authentically as possible. In this season of my life I want only authentic interactions with people so that is what I put out.
