Cherie, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you’ve thought about whether to sign with an agent or manager?
Trapped in the Web of Deceit: My Encounter with a Fraudulent Agent
My journey into the world of signing with an agent turned out to be an invaluable lesson that I feel compelled to share with others. The tale I recount serves as a stark warning, a cautionary tale of the dangers lurking in the shadows of the entertainment industry. It all began when I received a message from a certain Mr. “___,” whose name I shan’t utter again, along with his band of tricksters who masqueraded as legitimate agents.
Before diving into the story, allow me to briefly introduce myself. I am Cherie Lauren, the creative force behind Ma Cherie TV, a television show that has graced Australian screens for nearly a decade. My musical endeavors, under the same moniker, have also garnered recognition on the Australian music scene. From my maiden television season in 2006 to gracing the stage of “Australia’s Got Talent” in 2007, and even releasing my debut music album that same year, I have consistently strived for excellence. Notably, accolades like Best TV Presenter, Best Art Show, and Best Camera Work in 2007 adorned my path. Following a hiatus to embrace family life, I returned in 2016 with 15 more seasons of Ma Cherie TV and an array of new songs and music videos. My show transcended borders, reaching audiences through Australia’s Channel 31 and 44, eventually securing a place on Roku TV and Amazon Fire TV Pulse via Get Happi TV in California, USA.
Enter Mr. “___,” whose facade of success and credentials left me in awe. A supposed agent, he slid into my Facebook messages with an enticing narrative. His illustrious resume boasted involvement with renowned bands like “4not Blond,” who purportedly sold 13 million records of their single. He had even directed music videos for icons like “Hot Chili Peppers” and served as tour manager for the legendary “Guns N’ Roses.” His grandiose promises encompassed securing me a coveted spot performing alongside “Guns N’ Roses” on their worldwide tour — an opportunity seemingly ripped from my wildest dreams.
As an artist yearning for her “big break,” Mr. “___’s” pledges felt like divine intervention. A photograph purportedly from inside “Guns N’ Roses'” private mansion served as proof of his connections. The reel of assurances continued to unfurl:
A trip to the Cannes Film Festival, paving the way for distributing my 15-season TV show.
A stroll on the red carpet at the illustrious Met Gala.
A partnership with “Warner Brothers,” culminating in my TV show gracing their esteemed Hollywood studios.
The list was seemingly endless.
In the throes of these promises, Mr. “___” proffered a contract with a 24-hour expiration, placing undue pressure on my decision-making. Panic-stricken and racing against the clock, I endeavored to research his background on platforms like Google, IMDb, and various websites. Desperate inquiries to the band members he named yielded no definitive feedback. The ticking clock and the fear of letting this golden opportunity slip through my fingers ultimately drove me to sign the contract.
The ensuing six months unveiled a harsh reality. Progress remained elusive, and achievements proved nonexistent. While I continued to produce content for both television and music outlets in Australia, the enigmatic Mr. “___” emerged from the shadows with a sinister request: a staggering $150,000 to secure placements in prestigious publications like Vogue, Style Magazine, and Rolling Stone. A seed of doubt began to sprout within me. Drawing from my fashion industry experience, I recognized the unlikelihood of gracing such covers without monumental global success in music or film. This marked the turning point where my suspicions deepened.
Negotiations ensued, leading me to reluctantly part with $3,000 for a manager to handle the release of my new Spotify song. Yet, the web of deceit continued to entangle me for over a year. I poured funds into dreams that never materialized, into promises that proved to be as hollow as the air.
During this tumultuous period, I received a long-awaited revelation from the very bands Mr. “___” had name-dropped. These reputable artists vehemently denied any association with him, revealing his stories to be pure fabrications. I had been deceived, swindled by a master manipulator.
The aftermath saw me embroiled in legal battles, further draining my resources as I fought to untangle myself from this two-year ordeal. Having relocated to the United States, I stand resolute, a survivor of this harrowing episode. My gaze is now fixed on the horizon, as I seek a new agent and manager, determined to tread more cautiously and avoid falling prey to the same nefarious traps.
Cherie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Title: Embracing Resilience Through a Lifetime of Challenges
In the midst of the Iran-Iraq war, I was born into a unique blend of cultures—a testament to the strength of my Iranian father and Iraqi mother. However, this heritage, which I carry with pride, marked the beginning of a journey defined by resilience. Growing up in the school corridors during those tumultuous times, every step I took seemed to echo with challenges. The teachers and students regarded me as an outsider, as if my very identity was a betrayal. I didn’t quite fit the mold of the Iraqi children, my appearance a reflection of the beautiful Persian lineage inherited from my grandmother.
Guided by my father’s words that I resembled my enchanting grandmother, my journey through the years was one of facing adversity head-on. The scars of those schoolyard battles, both emotional and physical, stayed with me for over two decades. These experiences shaped me into the resilient individual I am today. Yet, my story doesn’t end there; it merely laid the foundation for the rollercoaster of experiences that would follow.
The subsequent years saw me navigating the ebb and flow of life in various countries, each new location presenting its own set of trials. The quest to find a place to truly call home and to form connections that evoked a sense of belonging became my unwavering pursuit. With each new challenge, I learned to rise and grow anew. The darkness that occasionally veiled my path only intensified my belief in uncovering light, and the shadow of sadness reinforced my commitment to seeking joy. Amidst moments of cruelty, I found strength in my faith in humanity’s inherent goodness.
Undeniably, these challenges broke me from the inside, but they never extinguished the flame of hope that resides within me. As I stand today, I’ve discovered a reservoir of strength that propels me forward, even when my very core is fractured. This journey has taught me to embrace the uncertain, and to hold onto the belief that tomorrow will usher in rays of sunshine and the fragrance of roses.
In the end, I remain steadfast in my belief that resilience isn’t just about enduring trials—it’s about thriving in spite of them. My story is a testament to the power of the human spirit to endure, adapt, and emerge stronger, no matter the circumstances. And while my odyssey continues, I hold onto the unwavering belief that love, hope, and the promise of a brighter tomorrow will forever guide my path.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Title: Nurturing a Flourishing Creative Ecosystem: Recognizing the Human Element
When contemplating the best way for society to foster support for artists, creatives, and a thriving creative ecosystem, it’s crucial to recognize that artists are, first and foremost, human beings. Like anyone else, they have basic needs—necessities like sustenance, shelter, and the opportunity for a fulfilling life.
To truly nourish the creative spirit that enriches our world, we must acknowledge that artists require the means to survive and sustain themselves. This includes being able to afford food, housing, and the essentials that allow them to pursue their craft wholeheartedly. When artists are provided with the conditions to lead stable lives, they can channel their energy into producing exceptional art that resonates with the world.
Be it a writer, director, musician, singer, painter, or actor, each creative endeavor requires dedication, time, and resources. Unfortunately, it’s evident that many artists are facing uphill battles, particularly those who are not yet established in their careers. The challenges they face, often unseen, can be overwhelming.
It’s a pressing concern that many artists are struggling, often feeling the weight of financial burdens. Without proper support, these individuals may be unable to fully devote themselves to their art. And herein lies the heart of the matter: if we perpetuate a culture that exploits artists or doesn’t adequately value their contributions, we risk extinguishing the flames of creativity.
This applies to creators across the spectrum. Writers, directors, musicians, singers, painters, and actors alike are all part of a shared ecosystem. Their collective contributions enrich our lives and shape our culture. However, without a concerted effort to uplift artists at all stages of their careers, we inadvertently stifle their ability to continue creating.
To ensure a vibrant creative ecosystem, society must consider the intrinsic value of art and creativity. Artists must receive compensation that accurately reflects their worth and the invaluable impact they have on our lives. By doing so, we demonstrate a commitment to nurturing creativity, enabling artists to flourish, and ultimately, preserving the very essence of art itself.
