We were lucky to catch up with Cheri Hoke recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Cheri thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to start by getting your thoughts on what you are seeing as some the biggest trends emerging in your industry.
In the graphic design. Industry I am seeing more logotypes instead of illustrated images that include a company’s name.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have always been a creative person, even as a child. My favorite hobbies were drawing and writing. I began teaching myself html back in 2001. I started writing code to build websites. This was prior to DreamWeaver or simplified apps from companies like GoDaddy or Wix. I was browsing colleges one day and I ran across my local community college. They were offering a degree in Advertising & Graphic Design. As I read through the description of the program, I felt a sense of finding a missing piece of a puzzle I called my life. I went in and met with the director of the program and the rest is history. I started the program in 2003 and graduated in 2005.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My collar mentor once told our class that deadlines were so important that if you missed your deadline, you were considered dead in the graphic design industry. Always give my clients an approximate time frame when I’m working on their projects I always keep that in mind that if I miss my deadline, my career is going to be seriously damaged. in the graphic design, business, your integrity and what you say, you’re gonna do matters just as much as your creative talents. If I tell a client that I will design their logo and I will have it completed in three days that logo is going to be created and completed in that timeframe even if that means that I have to go without sleep. I refuse to miss any deadlines.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
When I was in college, working on my advertising and graphic design degree I did not realize that I could go onto apps, such as YouTube and learn different tricks, and trades of the software that we use. Back in my day, the way that we learned those software programs was to play around with them and read books or figure out the hard way on how to create certain effects with our images. Today there are so many different areas that can help you learn different tricks and effects that will catch the audiences are when you’re creating a logo or an ad campaign. There is as I mentioned before and also Adobe offers master classes and has free videos on YouTube. That is extremely helpful in this field.
