We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cherelle Austin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Cherelle, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
I started my business simply by needing t-shirts and merchandise from a previous business that I owned, which was selling cosmetics. I needed the items so much, creating them myself became a thought. I sat and analyzed the situation and realized that I can just create the merchandise myself. I invested in the materials and tools to be able to execute my thoughts. I stayed up many long nights messing things up and challenging myself to try again once I failed at a project, I asked peers for help along with being on youtube 24/7. I then fell in love with the idea of creating items the more I made them, once I began getting orders for shirts and wine glasses made me consider making this a business. So I did. I finally put a name on this business in February of 2019. Knowing that people will always need the services I offer gave me an even bigger vision to manifest, which is leaving this business to my daughter at some point. Some say that family doesn’t support them however family is who supports me the most. Family Ties is here to stay.

Cherelle, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into this industry by needing items for a previous business that I owned (Presidential Cosmetics). The more I enjoyed creating items the less passionate I was about my cosmetic line. My goal is to help individuals and businesses bring their vision to life through custom apparel, wine glasses, acrylic plaques, masks, decals and more. I help clients create a physical item for the world to see through merchandise. What sets me apart from others is my work ethic and flexibility. I sometimes put myself in the client’s shoes when dealing with difficult situations and I provide empathy through every aspect of my business. I very rarely have an off day, I truly love what I do along with making people smile. I am very open to feedback as well and very transparent when it comes to creating. I aim to provide exceptional customer service with each and every client.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source that’s bought clients to me is word of mouth. I get alot of referrals which I have to thank my loyal clients for. If social media shut down today I do believe Family Ties would still thrive.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele is providing good customer service. Now although everyone isn’t always happy, I still try my best to fix any problems that may arise. My clients are usually understanding and happy once the issue is resolved. The transparency means alot to them and my willingness to help if their vision isn’t clear. I take pride in making sure my clients have the best experience
