We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cher Lindsey a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Cher, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
After 18 yrs of being in business and owning a day spa, the recession (2009) hit & times were very uncertain so I took my show on the road to service some of my existing clients. I then over the years began so focus on my aging clients and decided there was a real need to help those suffering with obesity, Parkinson’s, and other health problems. I learned how to accommodate everyone and never have I met someone I could not help. Every now and again I met with people who have brain injuries or clients in hospice that really were challenging but after I did, I felt really good about doing my best. I even have a service dog named Huckleberry that I bring with my every once in a while for those clients who can no longer have companion animals and miss them.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I moved here in the early 90s to finish cosmetology school and became a massage therapist to help put me through school. I had several relaxation centers in Mesa & Phoenix for 18yrs. I always have had good work ethics and still choose to work 7 days a week although the days are much shorter today due to so much time spent on the road. My mobil spa service today includes manicures, pedicures, and massages for special needs clients. I drive all over the valley.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
After I closed by businesses in 2008 and 2009, I was at an all time low. Loosing my house and choosing to close my businesses after such a long time was the lowest point in my life. It forced me to do contract work for other businesses and make less money than I was used to It also gave me a chance to grow and learn new things to improve my value like taking massage courses doing elder touch and even doing some adult care to supplement my income. The important thing is that I didn’t quit and now I have evolved my business into one I am proud of and is very unique and fulfilling.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I just kept seeing clients and taking jobs that didnt pay much and doing contract work until my business finally got going and I no longer needed to take just anything that came my way. Now, I realize the value of my time and I am able to charge travel fees for anything outside of my area. Time is my biggest asset.
