We recently connected with CHER HOBBICK and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, CHER thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
You need to be brave & have grit to be a successful entepreneur. As the company’s leader you need to face challenges, make mistakes, have set backs and still move forward keeping your eye on the prize. As they say if the company succeeds, congratulate the team, if the company fails, the leader has to step up and take the hit. A company has to grow to be successful, that means as a leader you’ll need to constantly keep working towards the next new goal, improving & refining the processes and be the back bone that allows your team to achieve at their best level. .
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Stupid NPR. I was listening to an audio essay about the fallacy of telling people to pursue their passion. The author said you should pursue your curiosity instead. I took that to heart and obtained an Associates of Science degree in Culinary Arts. I wanted to find out more about a cooking and I absolutely loved it. One thing lead to another and I opened Bite Me Catering about 3 years ago. Bite Me Catering is chef driven catering company focusing on great food and beautiful presentation. Our work focuses on making your guests feel apprecited and valued. We offer a full range of services and menus taylored to fit any need.
Can you talk to us about your experience with selling businesses?
When you start a business you should have an idea of your exit plan, What’s the end game. After all your hard work and dedication you should have a valuable entity that is sellable. My husband and I owned a $10 million company and when it came to sell, we had developed it having all the processes, proceedures and staffing in place. The company didn’t need us to be successful. If you as the business owner can’t go on vacation or take days off, your business is not a success. It needs to be able to stand on its own and run without you. If you need to be involved in your business everyday, you don’t have a business, you have a job. No one wants to buy a job.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
As you grow and become more successful, people you meet only see you as successful, they don’t see the late nights, the sacrifices or risks. They see you at this level and think you got luckly, or it was handed to you. They think you don’t deserve it. There’s not a real support system for success.
