We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chenhui Zheng a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Chenhui, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My parents have had a great impact on my artistic career, providing me with great support both economically and spiritually. I think the most important thing is still spiritual support. My parents are from a traditional Chinese family, and most traditional parents hope that their children can choose a stable job to make a living, while artists are definitely not a stable job. When my parents found out that I wanted to study art, what they gave me was not just denial, but strong support for my idea. I think this is the greatest influence my parents have had on me, and I am also very grateful to them.
Chenhui, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I don’t have a big definition of my own artwork. The art I like can bring happiness to people. I don’t need to give my work much meaning, I just hope it can bring happiness. What I am most proud of about my own artwork is its minimalist style. I used a simple composition and low saturation color scheme, which makes people feel very comfortable when they first see my work. At the same time, the simple composition and elements do not require too much effort to observe my work. To put it bluntly, my work will give people a little bit of fun in a simple and comfortable mode.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to create multiple joyful artworks. I hope to produce some peripheral products in the future, such as clothes or tattoos. Even, I hope to design more unique characters that I can collaborate with other brands in the future. For example, making it into a game or a game like character.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the biggest reward is to make people happy when they see my work. Of course, it would be better if someone could pay a high price for my artwork, but most importantly, I hope my artwork can bring relaxation to people.
