We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chenay Mitchell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Chenay , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Before I decided to start my foundation, I was working at Macy’s specializing in a brand called, International Concepts for plus size women, My job was focused on personal shopping and developing clientele. While working with my clients that’s when I realized self confidence was a actual awareness amongst women because everyone always had something negative to say about themselves. In the mean time I developed a closet organization business for my clients outside of Macy’s. My goal for my clients was to help improve there self confidence and especially how they personally felt about themselves. After two years of having my business I still felt like I wasn’t making a big enough impact amongst women, So I decided to stop perusing my business and to start a nonprofit in the Sacramento community. Now I devote all of my time to my nonprofit that I have created called, The Women’s Confidence Movement Inc.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
How I got started I use to work for Macy’s and specialized in a brand called International Concepts for plus size women. I noticed while working with my clients they would always speak very negative about themselves every time they looked in the mirror. That’s when I realized that confidence is a actual awareness amongst women. So while working with my clients I decided to create a business outside of Macy’s that was based on closet organization, personal shopping, and confident building workshops for the client. But because I was only able to help one client at a time I felt like I wasn’t making a big enough impact within my community. After having my business for two years I decided to give it up and create a nonprofit with the same objective called The Women’s Confidence Movement. It is focused on building confidence amongst women by doing confident building workshops and educating women on how to dress to fit their body structure.
During our work shops the problems we focus on is self doubting, comparing yourself to the next person, getting rid of negative habits, being self aware, and learning to self love.
I also created a coaching business called, The Confidence Code and it’s the same objective as The Women’s Confidence Movement accept its one on one coaching with clients.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
The best way to handle social media is to not worry about what others think and know only the important people will follow you. By building my audience I focused all my post on building confidence and I stopped getting to personal on my social media. I would post personal things sometimes but I learned to keep certain things private and focused more on my business.
Can you open up about a time when you had a really close call with the business?
Near death moments for business owners is definitely part of the process. My worse death experience has been me quitting my nine to five job and leaning on myself and my business one hundred percent financially. I am so use to having that consistent weekly income this was the first time that I didn’t so it made me strive more to work harder in my business so I can have my income.
