We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Chelsey Stevensen. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Chelsey below.
Chelsey , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear your thoughts about family businesses.
My thoughts on a family business boy where do I start? Not only do I own my own business but I come from a family business owners. My dad actually opened up a small café here in my hometown almost 10 years ago and I’ve got family who also run successful businesses in town, it’s really neat. It can definitely be a lot. I’d love to say that in years from now my own boys will be working or running the café, heck maybe even venture into barbering and working from moms shop.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
So..For those of you who don’t know me, My name is chelsey Stevensen I am a Minnesota based hairstylist of 13 years. I currently manage one salon in my hometown and am breaking ground here this summer on a brand new salon that will be owned by yours truly! I Always knew that being a hairstylist was something I wanted to do. I have a true Passion for it and for helping others. I feel like when my Clients sit down in my chair. We create a friendship we create a bond. They trust me. I trust them and it’s really so much more than just being somebody’s hairstylist you truly get to know people Sometimes on a whole new level other than basic conversation. That’s something I really value with my job and business.. Really creating that extra bond and a positive vibe between us. I think something I’m most proud about is being a mom and a business. Owner at the same time juggling 3 boys sports schedules and creating a good boundary and a healthy boundary for my family between business and work that’s something. I’ve struggled with but i’ve worked very hard at the last couple of years.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Oh man social media is a big one you know?! I remember starting an Instagram at 1st and I was like. Am I too old to be doing this even though I was still in my young twenties…You kind of get that like nervousness of what are people gonna think when I post my work.. who’s going to like it. Then came TikTok and I was In my thirties and really felt like I. Was too old but you know a lot of my younger clientele Loved when I posted transition videos and then it just became one of those things where I noticed a following of people who would sit down in my chair and say Oh. My Gosh gosh the Video posted was great or oh my gosh. I loved How you did this “How to” video it really helped me with my own hair! Another key..hashtags. Find what’s trending create your own # Your Business And just Let It Come To You. You might get no likes on one post but you might get a thousand likes on the next
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Social media truly has been a great resource for people to find my work. And obviously word-of-mouth. I have amazing clients who give me amazing referrals and reviews and for that i’m forever thankful. I feel like I build myself up by continuing education and working on being better in many different ways. I’m constantly trying to learn and learn new things style is always changing and if you don’t take classes and learn those new trends you’re not able To keep up with everybody else.
