We recently connected with Chelsey Ray and have shared our conversation below.
Chelsey, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason, but I do sometimes wish that I would’ve started this plan about five years sooner. It would’ve been nice to be able to make this awesome transition with a little bit more time in my 20s. I didn’t really get going in this plan until I was 28/29 and it would’ve been nice to have a few more years of my 20s to work with.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Nice to meet you. I’m Chelsey! I Got my BFA degree in photography back in 2018 and then got started making crystal/brass jewelry after an old box of jewelry items I had mysteriously flew out of my closet which kick-started my spiritual journey. When couldn’t find the style of jewelry I saw in my head, I decided to make it myself. Turns out people really liked seeing what I made and that’s how earth fragments was born.
I specialize in designing unique jewelry to help the feminine power emerge as well as jewelry that helps aid with anxiety, confidence, and protection. I love creating Ethereal, and sacred geometrical brass and 18k gold pieces As well as holding space for women of color to feel safe in.
I focus on listening to spirit when I create so many of my designs are one-of-a-kind. I always strive to create something i’ve never seen before.
One of the things i’m most proud of are my portal necklaces, They are a series of sacred geometrical necklaces that I made and also double as an anti-anxiety spinner, you can spend the pieces away from you to send bad energy away or you can spin them towards you to bring in good energy. They’re also a great piece to fidget with as well without breaking and i just love the look i get from people who have never seen them in action before.
I really want clients to feel the intentionality of my jewelry. They aren’t just made to look pretty. They all have a purpose and I love being able to teach and show people the purpose that each one of my pieces has. For instance, I did a mirror collection recently that was made to help deflect negative energy away to keep the energy that wearer safe.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I believe making more space for art and educational systems areas of the US s well as underprivileged areas can really help society grow. Being able to plant the seeds for the youth, as well as people who are no longer in school who want to have those opportunities is a great way to help society grow in a more positive aspect. We don’t realize how important art is to our society, and I think making more space for that art in our society would cause so many benefits.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A big lesson that I had to learn when I first started creating, was the fear of someone else taking my idea or someone similar to me thriving more. I realized that all of us grow better together and I’ve come into contact with so many amazing artists and people who are very similar to me and making that space for connection rather than competition has really changed my heart and help me grow in a positive way.
