We recently connected with Chelsey Peters and have shared our conversation below.
Chelsey, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Isn’t it terrifying to step out into a new world? That’s how I felting August 2014 while having a discussion with my cousin over lunch about the idea of becoming a cosmetologist. I had recently ended my time in the United States Army and felt completely out of sorts about “what was next.” I was telling her that going to The Paul Mitchell School had been on my mind, but I wasn’t sure if they would accept the military education benefits. Within two hours of finishing our lunch, she had texted me all of the school information and two months later I was a Future Professional at the Paul Mitchell School in Fayetteville, NC.
Chelsey, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi! I’m Chelsey Peters, the owner of Oh! You’re Fancy Salon located in the Haymount area of Fayetteville, NC. I have been a licensed cosmetologist since 2015. Throughout my career I have had the opportunity to work in many facets of the artistry including alongside world renowned educators, avant garde hair shows, barbershops, and now my own salon suite. My specialties include creative colors, blonding services, hair extensions, and specialty haircuts. I strive to create an environment that is luxurious, calm, & relaxing with the perfect amount of weird and silly! I enjoy having fun with my guests and I love when we feel like friends – especially after just meeting! Prior to becoming a cosmetologist I was a member of the US Army where I worked as a surgical technologist assisting doctors during surgery. During that season of life, I learned the magic that our hands and hearts hold in healing and providing comfort for others. I have since carried that lesson into my hair craft. Outside of the salon I love to practice yoga and I am pursuing Yoga Therapy to bring more comfort and healing to my guests and our community . I also enjoy reading, hanging with my pup Hera, kayaking with friends and gardening.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
At Oh! Your Fancy Salon, creating an environment that is a magical escape filled with love and care is a priority for me. I spend many hours with my guests and want them to feel as comfy as possible while receiving luxury services. Whether that means we discuss their latest read or bask in silence, we enter that space together. I have learned through my 10 years experience that visiting a salon is a major form of self care and at times the only form of self care women give themselves. I want to ensure that my guests are receiving all that they need from me during their appointment. The second mission close to my heart is ensuring that the hairstyles I provide are maintainable for each guest after they leave the salon. I’ve heard too many instances where guests tell me “my hair never looks the same when I do it at home.” I want each person to feel their best whether they are six days or six weeks since their last visit . I believe in hairstyles that accentuate your lifestyle!
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
In our community “love local” has become a staple. We have small shops throughout our towns and the support from our community is beautiful. Shopping small and artisan businesses helps us continue to create works of art in all mediums. When guests purchase hair products from my salon, I can ensure they are receiving the proper products to help address any concerns they are having with their hair, protect the integrity of their hair, ensure color longevity, and maintain their desired overall look. Purchasing the extras I offer, such as hair clips, stickers, holiday stocking stuffers are an added bonus that makes me do a happy dance. Going to your local theater’s play for a date night or an art gallery showing are fun ways to experience new forms of art and support creatives. Support doesn’t always have to come in a monetary form. Sharing social media posts from your favorite artists, writers, or selfies with your new hair are great ways to help expand our reach. Online reviews are always valued and the same with referrals!
