We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chelsey Coy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Chelsey thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
When you think two-oh-six, you think Seattle or an area code, right? Well not for us!
We get that question all the time, but twoOHsix Music was actually born out of a songwriter’s retreat in Palm Springs back in 2018. A group of friends – all songwriters/singers/producers – went to the desert to write 18 songs in 2 days and decided that we should start a company with our own extensive music catalogs. The room number we stayed in was 206. Fast forward to 2022 and we have our own music licensing and supervision agency based out of Los Angeles with over 800 artists featured on our roster.
Chelsey, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I always knew I wanted to work in music, but I saw myself in a more creative role – as a singer-songwriter or a session singer, etc. I’ve performed and sang throughout my life, done voice overs and recorded vocals for multiple bands, I went to college for music business (Hey, USC!) and I have written over 200 songs. It wasn’t until I moved back to LA (from NYC) in 2017 that I considered music for film & TV . At the time, I listened to a podcast with a well-known sync songwriter and she mentioned that she taught an online course. That night, I joined up to start my sync licensing journey! For the next 9 months I learned as much as I could and went to as many events and met as many people as I could. I wrote and recorded my first sync-friendly songs and started pitching them to opportunities. I still think of the course as one of the best things I’ve ever done because I met my co-owners and lots of other collaborators while taking it.
I’m so proud of the forward motion twoOHsix Music has made in the last 3 years. Each year we’ve grown more and more, but last year we secured 100 placements for our roster of artists and we started dabbling in music supervision. We have completed 4 music supervision projects – including 3 short films and 1 full-length – and are working on our 2nd full-length feature now!
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Networking and going to as many events as possible. We also attend yearly conferences and often speak on panels so that we can meet other music supervisors and also meet musicians that want to sign their songs to our catalog.
Have you ever had to pivot?
My whole career in music has been constantly evolving. I think the biggest change came for me when I realized I wanted to make a living doing music and not just do “art for art’s sake”. The industry has changed so much since I got started that many revenue streams are no longer viable. Pivoting my career to focus more on sync licensing was one way to make an impact both for getting my music out there to a new audience and also getting paid for it.
