We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Chelsea Thompson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Chelsea below.
Chelsea, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
I began my career within the art gallery business in NYC, where the business is selling high priced artwork to wealthy collectors. I couldn’t afford anything in the galleries I worked in, but I still collected art whenever I could, scouring flea markets and antique stores for affordable treasures. When I left the gallery world, I began to consider what I found to be a hole in the art market – thoughtfully curated, quality antique fine art at truely afforable prices. To often aspiring collectors without the ability to spend alot of money on art assume that high quality fine art is inaccessible. The reality is that there is so much vintage and antique art by very talented unknown or little known artists just waiting to be rediscovered and appreciated. I love that I get to bring these pieces to market and witness the excitement of my customers when they get to take home the art they’ve fallen in love with.
Chelsea, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I founded Hague House in 2022 to offer works of art and decorative objects to collectors who desire high quality pieces at more accessible prices than are typically found in the art world.
To the business, I bring both my lifelong love of art and antiques and the experience of working in prominent New York City art galleries, dealing and curating exhibitions of historical and contemporary art. I studied American Fine and Decorative Arts at Sotheby’s Institute of Art in New York City and now live in Brooklyn with my husband and two sons.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I started my business with very little money. I began slowly buying material at low prices and eventually as I made money on sales, I was able to invest more into my purchases. It has had a snowball effect, and as I grew my inventory my business became more profitable.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Participating in art markets as been a great way to meet new clients. It’s helpful for collectors to consider a purchase of artwork in person when possible. It’s also a lot of fun for me to meet fellow art lovers!
