We were lucky to catch up with Chelsea Singh recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Chelsea, thanks for joining us today. Let’s jump right into the heart of things. Outsiders often think businesses or industries have much larger profit margins than they actually do – the reason is that outsiders are often unaware of the biggest challenges to profitability in various industries – what’s the biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
Now for instance the times we’re living in, families are spending less money on their hair and more money on experiences or saving etc. As pricing goes up around us people cut costs and what’s the first thing to go? Luxury services. As a business owner I have single handedly seen the fluctuations where people are spreading their finances a little thinner than they were a year ago and therefore spending less in the salons. They’ll push their hair color an extra month or two, go with a haircut or a polish change or even go without the hair all together. Unfortunately politics have played such a huge role in our industry that it’s currently facing many challenges that will make the future of our industry more difficult to profit from.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

Founder/Owner | Hair Artist | Educator
Chelsea Singh Hair
Hi, I’m Chelsea Singh — a licensed Cosmetologist, a hair artist, salon founder, and educator with a passion for creating bold, beautiful transformations that honor both your style and your story. With over 14 years experience I specialize in dimensional blondes, rich brunettes, vivid custom colors, dreadlocks and my signature #NeapolitanHair, a unique blend of pink, brown, and blonde tones.
At the heart of my work is a commitment to hair health and intentional artistry. I love working with clients over time to build stunning results that last, always putting the integrity of your hair first. No quick fixes — just real, thoughtful transformations.
My approach blends natural, lived-in texture with edgy, modern color placement because I believe hair should feel just as unique and powerful as the person wearing it. I’ve created Chelsea Singh Hair LLC to be an inclusive, welcoming space for everyone — all textures, all identities, all humans.
Whether I’m behind the chair or sharing my work online, my goal is always the same: to help you feel confident, empowered, and 100% yourself — through hair that tells your story.

Can you open up about a time when you had a really close call with the business?
The biggest and most influential was when I had started my business. I had just started seeing my first clients in my own suite as a full-time salon owner. I was fully responsible for funding all supplies I needed along with everything else that comes along with starting a new business. All the little things were adding up and I was just scraping by. Prior to this, I had just taken a couple of years off work/hair to help my husband with VA appointments. I then started working at Starbucks part-time and I didn’t have a loyal following. Just a hope and a dream.
Then came 2020….Covid-19.
I got the notification to shut down and within 24 hours the salon I had just opened had to be closed completely. No working or we’d get our licenses taken away. After a month of waiting, I was finally able to go back to work but with restrictions. Never in my life did I think I’d have to take my clients’ temperatures and ask if they had been traveling. I’m not a doctor?! I do know anatomy (thanks to cosmetology school) but I’m no doctor. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I had just started my business with a small clientele and the world had just shut down for an entire month with no back-up savings, I was drowning. I said yes to anything that wanted to book with me. I had to advertise to anyone who said “I like your hair!“. Thankfully, my friends and family played a huge role in spreading the word and thankfully my work spoke for itself. Within a year, I was caught up. Sometimes I didn’t know where my next rent payments would come from but I had faith it would all work out. Somehow someone would book when bills were due. Sometimes minutes apart. Sometimes I would have to borrow money from friends and family. I refused to give up and now I’m living my goals. Doing hair by my rules in my salon. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Building an online presence for Chelsea Singh Hair has been just as intentional as the work I do behind the chair. I use my platform not just to showcase beautiful hair, but to connect, educate, and create a space where people feel seen and inspired. From bold color journeys to subtle dimension, I love sharing the process — not just the end result. My signature looks, like #NeapolitanHair, have helped build a visual identity that’s both artistic and recognizable. My content reflects the truth about hair: real change takes time, care, and commitment. I talk openly about the process — the multiple appointments, the maintenance, and the patience it takes to do it right. I want clients to feel educated and empowered, not sold to. I believe education is part of the service. Online, I break down color theory, explain aftercare, and share insights that help clients understand their hair better. Whether you’re in my chair or scrolling my page, I want you to leave with more knowledge and confidence. My salon — and my online presence — is built for everyone. All textures, all identities, all stories are welcome. I make sure that shows up in my content, in the voices I amplify, and in the way I connect with my community. Everything I post has purpose. I use hashtags like #ChelseaSinghHair and #NeapolitanHair to help people find my work and feel part of something creative and real.

At the end of the day, my goal online is the same as it is in the salon: to help people feel confident, cared for, and completely themselves — one post, one client, one transformation at a time.
