We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chelsea Oxborough a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Chelsea, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I always had an interest in making videos but didn’t take learning it seriously until 2018. That year I bought my first real camera and started to watch Youtube tutorials on camera settings and editing. In 2020 when covid hit I had way more time on my hands and started to create product videos in my apartment. I would post these videos to social media and they started to gain interest from people and brands. In this time is when I really kickstarted my passion for creating and building a brand for myself.
I’m also a musician and have been involved in the music scene in Minneapolis for many years so my work naturally gravitated to making music videos and working with local musicians. People started to notice what I was doing in video and would ask me to film or shoot photos at their live show. Since then I’ve shot countless shows and have created over 30 music videos. Most recently I filmed for a yearly music festival in Gainesville, FL called FEST. This was my largest and most favorite project to date.
I think the most essential part of my process was learning from my mistakes. I’m far from where I started but I’m still nowhere near where I want to be and I continue to learn new things everyday. I think one of the most essential skills is just having patience with the process and to keep working through all your mistakes.

Chelsea, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
A bit more about me is that I’m located in Minneapolis but am willing to travel for my video work. As I mentioned before I recently shot a music festival in Florida and am hoping to do a lot more of that in the coming year. Music + Video work are my two favorite things so getting the chance to blend the two together is my dream job. I’m hoping to connect with more musicians outside of Minneapolis as well. A goal of mine is to someday be a touring videographer/photographer – so if anyone out there is looking- hit me up!
Outside of music content I have a wide range of experience including brand videos, real estate, event recaps, social media, and weddings. I’m happy to have had experience in so many different fields and continue to grow with each new project.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
When I first started making videos I would create product videos for local businesses. I think this helped kick start my social media presence because I would tag the business/product and then my work would get shared. In doing this I’ve had multiple brands reach out to me about working together. I think the same goes for my work with local bands and music festivals because my work will get shared by multiple people driving more attention to my page.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I think my main goal that currently drives me is just to be the best that I can be in this field. I still have so much to learn but thinking of how far I’ve come in just a few years makes me really excited about what could possibly happen within a few more years.
