We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chelsea Husum a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, Chelsea thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?

Being an entrepreneur definitely is not for the faint of heart, let’s be honest. You literally have everything on the line: your home, everything you personally own. It can be pretty crazy to think about. But for me, I absolutely adore this company that I’ve built and am so grateful that I am my own boss and I own my time. There is no way I could ever go back to working a “regular” job or working for someone else. As a business owner, you’re pretty much constantly working in one way or another, but you also can create the flexibility you need at times. You wake up in the middle of the night thinking about work, and it’s pretty much always on your mind. But I am so grateful that I have the most amazing employees who keep me laughing and our clients are fantastic. I really love spending my days working with all of these incredible individuals.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

American GPR & Coring is a woman-owned MWBE, SBE, EBE & DBE certified company with extensive construction experience in the Denver metro area. We are proud to offer Ground Penetrating Radar and core drilling in the Denver construction market.

We focus on communication and honesty and will always think of the client’s solution first, even if that means passing the work on to another company, if we are not able to perform the needed scope.

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?

I think communication, transparency and honesty is key for managing any team and maintaining high morale. I am constantly asking my employees for feedback and am open to any suggestions or feedback they have. They know they can come to me with anything, even if it’s an uncomfortable conversation, they know I will listen and we will have a discussion and I’m always open to changing things if they’re not working.

We also joke around a lot and our group texts make me sit there laughing out loud. We have fun, we don’t take ourselves too seriously and we support each other. We help each other out as needed. I make it a point to celebrate the employees’ birthdays, work anniversaries and other things that they enjoy in their personal lives.

I do not believe in micromanaging, so I empower my employees to go out and do their best work, because they are the true experts and they know so much about their trade, it’s like an art. I always trust that they’re out doing what they do best and they’re representing the company well. We always support each other and strive to communicate so we’re on the same page.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?

We are grateful to earn the majority of our clients through word of mouth and referrals from existing clients. We also meet many people at various industry networking events. Sometimes we get calls because people see our company vans on a site also. But we have a lot of people share our info with people they know and their colleagues.
