Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea Holmes.
Hi Chelsea, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In college I studied mechanical engineering and then pursued a career in construction where I became a superintendent. After that I moved into a construction technology consulting role and was working on our mushroom farm on the side alongside my husband, Ian. A few months ago I left my full time job and am working on our business (Good Human Mushrooms) full time.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I was always a bit lost on what I wanted to do when I “grew up” and really did not feel that tied to engineering or construction. I worked hard at whatever I was pursuing so I was able to succeed, but I was not passionate about those fields. Being a woman in construction was one of the biggest struggles I faced along the way. Being constantly doubted and challenged just because you are female is tough to deal with. I love getting to manage my own company now, and pave my own way!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My husband and I run a solar powered gourmet mushroom farm based in Pace, Florida. We enjoy finding unique ways to use our mushrooms such as Lion’s Mane chocolate chip cookies, granola & jerky! We aim to build community in each market we are apart of and genuinely love getting to know the customers and other vendors. We are really proud to be a solar powered indoor mushroom farm because we are passionate about reducing our company’s impact on the planet and would love to help anyone else set up solar for their farm! We are open to answering any questions or chatting more with fellow farmers to help out in any way we can!
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success to me is first and foremost being able to pay my bills without stress, I don’t know that we would be able to truly relax and enjoy our hobbies if that basic need is not met. I don’t see success as earning millions of dollars though, I am not really interested in that. I would rather earn enough to be comfortable and spend the rest of the time with family, friends, and on hobbies instead of trying to earn more revenue.
