We recently connected with Chelsea Glattman and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Chelsea thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
“Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life.” I always thought the phrase to be a bit idealistic and cliché until I was fully able to experience it myself; the way that passion can so effortlessly drive success.
As a creative I always felt stifled in my corporate rolls, unable to fully flex my design muscles and grow within my roles. Constantly frustrated by the endless politics that came alongside working in the confines of a large corporate structure. It wasn’t until 2020 and a global pandemic where I was cut down to part time in my role that I really leaned into my passion for home and design. The extra time allowed me to share my own experience of “making house home” with the world and connect with an audience who felt the same. As my little corner of the internet grew, so did the opportunities to work one on one with clients to bring their dreams and visions for their own home to life..before I knew it I was quitting my 9-5 and starting my own design studio from the ground up.
It has been a wild ride filled with many challenges, but it’s that innate passion that drives each day forward and has allowed me to redefine success. Which is waking up everyday excited and grateful to be doing what I love.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Chelsea, owner of Chelsea Interior Studio where I specialize in both commercial and residential interior design. I offer everything from consulting, floor plan layout & material selection, to full service renovations. My belief is that every space should feel cozy and collected and my aesthetic is deeply rooted in my love for European design.
All of my years spent studying the arts alongside my time spent building and making for my own home has allowed me to get even more creative with my clients budgets. Whether that’s sourcing pieces from marketplace, auctions, or thrift stores or designing and making pieces myself, the goal is always to achieve the overall vision.
I truly believe that the spaces we spend our time in have a great impact on our daily lives, so it is the honor of a lifetime to work in tandem with my clients to bring these dream spaces to life.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Oh, the art of the pivot! I have had to pivot many many times in starting my business, especially when it came to forming my own design process. Since my background is in fashion and not interiors and my transition into the industry happened somewhat organically I had to spend a lot of time figuring out all the intricacies of the process. This meant taking on a a lot of projects for free or for next to little money, experimenting with different trades and editing my own process slowly over time. Each project and individual is so unique, but it is my job to communicate the aesthetic and vision effectively to all parties, from my clients to the contractors, installers, millworkers, or workrooms…that communication needs to be seamless in order to achieve the desired end result.
Those learnings have been instrumental on job sites or full renovations where the art of the pivot comes into play more times than you would think. Sometimes you won’t know if something can be achieved until a wall is open and you have to problem solve very quickly to come up with another solution that makes everyone happy. Being able to be flexible and pivot directions when necessary is an extremely valuable skill.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I believe whole-heartedly in the power of home and its ability to impact how our lives function, so much so that it makes me EMOTIONAL. The purchase of mine and my husbands first home was so powerful to me, it opened space for me to really find myself, it’s our safe space and the keeper of some of our happiest memories. I believe that everyone should feel that way about their home, and not just because it is beautiful but because it is there that you feel like your truest self. There is so much to say about how our environment impacts our mood and I love solving that puzzle for my clients. To help them create a space where they get to live out some of their happiest memories, where coming home is the absolute favorite part of their day..that is the greatest gift.
