We recently connected with Chelsea Ellis-Hogan and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Chelsea thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
We are a minority, locally and woman owned asphalt and concrete maintenance business located in Louisville, KY. We are a third generation family owned business with over 30 years of experience in the industry. We are different due to the fact that we help other minorities get into the construction industry and learn trade skills, financial literacy and leadership skills.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
– My father Sam Ellis has been in the industry over 40 years so that was my introduction to business, home improvement and construction.
– I am a #1 Best selling author of Fail to Success, public speaker and owner of a asphalt/concrete maintenance company.
– I help those who own properties have a asphalt and concrete maintenance maintenance plan that saves them thousands of dollars in the future.
– I help other minorities get their start into the home improvement and construction industry and help them develop a leadership and ownership plan.
– I am most proud of being able to carry on the name and legacy of my great uncle Jim while help others in the process and creating generational wealth for my family.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I created a online video series called “The Chelsea Ellis Show” where I interviewed other young entrepreneurs. Through creating that platform it helped me build my brand and reputation within the market place. I also played a major role in the companies sales department and made sure we incorporated email and social media marketing which helped me build relationships online and also offline.
I believe people do business with someone they like and trust so due to that having strong communication with customers has also helped me over my career.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Our asphalt company began to grow rapidly during COVID-19. Due to this as a small business owner I had to pivot more into focusing on working on the business instead of in it in order to create a strong team that could handle the work load. I also had to pivot and focus on systems that we could create that could help our sales system run smoothly. Another pivot is I had to also start focusing on succession planning and what retirement for my father and myself would look like in the future.
Small business owners hardly give themselves a exit plan so it was important for me to do so for myself and to help the future of the business as well.
