We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Chelsea Braverman . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Chelsea below.
Chelsea , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My parents were and have been 100 percent supportive and all-in my entire life. They took it a step further by not only supporting but being excited and thrilled with every new creative adventure. Instead of leading me, they guided me. Instead of simply attending, they SHOWED up in the biggest and most enthusiastic ways. They never wanted my sister or me to be “mini me’s” as many parents do. Instead, they wanted us to create our own paths.
Chelsea , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My company, Braver Players, was formed as a theater company for kids, tweens, and teens to both learn about and love theater. As a kid, I grew up doing community theater outside of Chicago and met people from all walks of life. It changed me and left an indelible
impact. I wanted to replicate this impact by creating a place outside of school for kids and teens to come to as a sort of retreat and escape. I have used my education background to transform a company into a a second home where we can all learn from each other and share our talents.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
The most remarkable challenge I have had in my journey as a creative was during Covid when theater companies were shutting down left and right. I had no choice but to mount three major productions outside by building stages outside, seating audience members six feet apart, having individual prop bins for actors so no one would touch each others things, and even having to build transparent set pieces since actors couldn’t touch. This made me realize we could do anything after this point.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is to create a safe space for artists to grow. It is also my mission to donate to other small non for profits and support them in their endeavors. Every show we donate part of our ticket sales to a non for profit that we believe strongly in.
