Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Chef Kita. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Chef, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
I started my business in April of 2021. Got my license and set up software, applied for a dedicated business account. I did all of the things that I knew to do. I got my first email in May from a gentleman in Chapel Hill. They were planning a graduation party for their daughter. I was so excited! I made all of the preparations. Hired someone and recruited my husband to help out. The day of the party came and I was so nervous! I had to remind myself to breathe lol. Everything went better than I could’ve imagined. The clients were happy, the guests loved the food. I’ve worked them a few more times over the years and that family will forever hold a special place in my heart.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a private chef that has been in the culinary industry for 16 years. I specialize in creating in-home dining experiences. So imagine having the total upscale restaurant experience but in the comfort of your own home. In addition to these kinds of elevated food experiences, my team and I also cater small events and offer corporate catering as well. I think what sets me apart from others who may do what I do is my pure love for providing people with excellent food and service. Seeing someone’s face light up or hearing “oh, my gosh” after a first bite? I mean, the feeling I get with that is top tier.
I also just released my first cookbook in February. I’m beyond proud of myself for that. I must say that I suffer from Imposter Syndrome at times so putting this out into the world was a bit scary. So far the feedback has been great and sales are going steady. I couldn’t be more happy with that.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Oh that’s easy! People genuinely like me. I don’t treat my clients like a paycheck. I am interested in them. I listen to them. I provide top notch customer service and expect the same of my team. We’ll go above and beyond every single time to ensure that anyone who books with us enjoys their time with us. And that is how referrals happen. Word of mouth is so powerful and in this business it’s a great marketing tool. I actually suck at using social media so I’m always thankful for those clients who tell a friend or post about our services.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Be kind. Even in the moments where you may have to be stern or give discipline, there is a way to do it without tearing an employee down. Also, I trust my team to do their job. I don’t hover or micromanage. That’s a toxic trait in my opinion. My people know what I expect and rarely do I ever have to course correct. I praise them when they do a great job and they receive little tokens of thanks.
