We were lucky to catch up with Chef Keon Atwater, CCP recently and have shared our conversation below.
Chef Keon, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
When I think about the question, “what do you think it takes to be successful”…the first thought that comes to mind is a strong sense of self. Yes there are various answers that could be given but this one sticks out to me most because trying to reach for stars that you can barely see surely takes a toll on the dreamer. The most important fact to hold onto is the power you possess and the goals you aim to reach. Success is a spectrum gauged on personal description. For me success looks like a peace of mind and financial stability, for some that may be achieving riches or going places they have not yet seen. Success is the glass ceiling and standard we hold ourselves to that I believe is meant to be broken. I say this because aiming to be successful puts a box around our dreams in the reality we are creating, what we think is success now can shift any moment. So for me I think it takes being firm and grounded in yourself because this journey isn’t easy and sometimes you will encounter boundary or be forced to shift your vision, to be successful you must believe in yourself. Remember that this is the ultimate tool, take this with you and you can go further then the stars.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe that being relatable, accessible and transparent with people whether they are my customers in real life or followers on social media is what has helped me build my reputation within my market. At the end of the day, there are Chefs everywhere so I had to think about what would set me apart. Outside of being multifaceted and displaying my talents, I wanted to create an intimate experience where people could feel the positivity being shared through my food. When it comes to my customer experience I aim to please, leading with empathy, compassion and love. These are basic traits that I feel are vital to the human experience. By creating an environment that fosters this energy, naturally people gravitate towards me. When it comes to creating my niche in my market I knew i would need to stay true to myself and the experience I wanted to convey.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Once upon a time, not too long after graduating culinary school I decided to pursue a path outside of the industry. This was the moment in my life when I received a wake up call. At this time I wanted to explore options outside of being a chef, although it has been a passion since I was a child. It’s crazy what a lack of confidence can do to you, but equally the journey must be appreciated. I remember spending two years after graduating solely focusing on customer service related jobs because I was excellent at it, not to brag. I guess for me it was easier than being in the kitchen but equally did not give me an outlet for my passion. It took me a while but eventually I realized that I was running away from my calling. That point in my life is one that I am grateful for because it gave me great perspective when it comes to customer’s and how we interact with them. This begin to build the foundation that I currently operate off of today, it’s not always about the customer being right but it is always about the customer’s experience. It’s crazy to think that this time I spent provided structure in a way I don’t think I would have achieve had I rushed into my passion. Not too long after that I told myself that I was capable of accomplishing my dreams, which led me to follow my passion as a Chef. The tools acquired along the way, especially in my customer service journey, not only helped me when dealing with clientele but also in management. At first it seem like a pivot, but experience has shown it was meant to be a part of my journey. That is how I got to where I am today.
