We were lucky to catch up with Chef DeeJay Ferguson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Chef DeeJay, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
My first client was through word of mouth. I had recently left the “restaurant industry” and wasn’t working but had left a great impression with a lot of my customers who would eventually become my clients. It was a birthday celebration that really gave me the ability to create dishes outside of the box of my normal realm and challenged me in new ways. I was extremely excited because I love creating. Anything new/challenging a client brings me is always fun.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
The birth of my first child. I was working in Hawaii, and living in Tacoma,WA , while my child’s mother lived in Arizona. Upon learning she was pregnant I moved to Arizona as soon as I possibly could and what a culture shock!

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I was always told that if you are kind people will be kind to you. I’ve always led with that. But I had to learn that that’s not always true and no matter what I have to be able to handle that. There’s good people and bad people but no matter what there’s a lesson to be learned through every interaction with people.
